TALIBAN SUCCEEDS WHERE BIN LADEN FAILED IN KILLING OF NAVY SEALS
August 6 2011
Kabul Afghanistan – At least 31 U.S. soldiers have been killed in an attack on a Navy helicopter in eastern Afghanistan. It is believed that twenty of those killed in the strike were members of Navy SEAL Team 6, the same unit which killed Osama bin Laden a few months ago, a feat providing no doubt a sense of vengeance and payback for the Afghan side.
Early reports indicate that the helicopter was shot down by rocket fire while taking part in raid on another home late on Friday. It’s not yet clear who the target may have been but the circumstances are eerily reminiscent of the attack on the bin Laden compound in May, albeit far less successful.
Already Taliban forces are celebrating the downing of the aircraft and the killing of the SEALs, a feat which they have noted even the mighty Osama bin Laden could not accomplish, a claim which is starting to create breaks in the alliance with Al Qaeda forces.
“We are in the process of accessing the facts. There was a crash overnight and number of U.S. soldiers were killed. There was enemy activity in the area,” said NATO spokesperson Capt. Justin Brockhoff.
The deaths are the single biggest death toll the United States has suffered since the start of the war nearly a decade ago and could be an indicator that Taliban forces are finally getting serious about fighting.
“This is a dangerous event, not only because it took out a number of highly trained soldiers but also because it is a propaganda coup for the Taliban. They killed the people who killed bin Laden and that is a powerful weapon, even more powerful than rockets and AK-47’s,” said a military insider. “We are very concerned that they will use this against future forces. I mean we will obviously have to respond but it does take away some of the power of the bin Laden killing which kind of sucks.”
Al Qaeda has made no comment on the killings as yet.
“This is a major victory for the Taliban, make no mistake about it. I mean it was really just a fluke. They shoot missiles into the air all the time and most of them miss their targets but this one hit and hit hard and it’s going to be tough to come back from this,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “If you shoot enough missiles into the air eventually you are going to hit something, and this time they hit the jackpot. Not only did they kill a bunch of Americans but they killed really valuable targets and it is going to be powerful symbol for them.”
It’s not clear yet to which unit the other ten soldiers belonged or whether or not that matters. Seven Afghans were also killed in the attack.
“You cannot underestimate the power of symbolism but the real question will be not whether or not this is a symbolic victory, but against whom it will be used,” continued Martinez. “The U.S. doesn’t really need symbolism because they have lots of bombs and bullets, but if the Taliban uses it as a tool against Al Qaeda, to show how they can succeed where the other fails, well then this could end up being a big victory for the U.S. Or it could mean nothing, I mean we don’t really know.”
Family members of SEAL Team 6 have not and likely will never be informed of their deaths.
