THINGS GETTING CRAZY AT TRIPOLI PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL
August 30 2011
Tripoli, Libya – There are many stories that have emerged from Libya in the last six months and, inevitably, more will emerge going forward. As rebels continue to solidify their hold on the country and as it becomes more and more apparent that Gaddafi and his regime will simply never be back in power, the stories of the conflict and the aftermath will now start to flood in, and most of them likely won’t be very pleasant.
That is very much that case for the lone psychiatric hospital in the capital which has been inundated with new cases in recent months even as its supplies and space become more and more restricted. It is here, where some of the neediest are suffering the most, and here where the greatest tragedies may yet unfold and as the country continues to be chaotic and just a little crazy.
“The situation has been bad for many years, but since two months it has become very bad. We urgently need drugs, especially sedatives,” a doctor told the AFP. “We've seen relapses; people who have been in remission for 10 years have come back. We've also seen plenty of new cases, maybe 15 a day since the start of the revolution.”
Even some patients have left the facility, saying that it’s just too crazy in there for them to stay.
“Unfortunately there are a lot of these types of stories starting to emerge. The sick and wounded are always the last people to be dealt with in these types of conflicts, and the mentally ill are the lowest on the priority list because their sickness is mostly in their heads,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “They are going
to continue to suffer and it’s going to start driving the hospital staff a little nuts, if it hasn’t already.”
The lone hospital covers most of western Libya, a population of about 3 million people.
“There are probably a lot of other such situations throughout the country where people simply cannot get treatment because of the conflict and that is going to be a problem as well. The facilities are already overwhelmed and any additional pressure isn’t going to help,” continued Hander. “I can imagine that if this conflict ever ends it is going to be tough for the doctors and nurses. It’s just going to be crazy and I don’t envy them one bit. This is one part of war that is rarely spoken about but it is just as potent and important as any other battle.”
The country has only one more psychiatric hospital, in the city of Benghazi.
“We are aware of the situation in the hospitals and we are doing what we can to help them. As maybe you can understand things are a little crazy here right now and we are dealing with many things and so that is not our priority,” said a rebel commander. “We have many things on our minds right now and we do not want to be inundated with all these other concerns. There is too much going on right now and we cannot deal with everything at once without the risk of driving us mad. We know of their concerns and we will get to them.”
Traffic to the hospital is expected to get a little nuts once rebel forces secure the roads.
