WIKILEAK DOCUMENTS REVEAL POSSIBLE POLLUTION PROBLEMS IN CHINA
August 29 2011
Beijing, China – Wikileaks is at it again. Months after running afoul of most of the world’s governments, the organization has once again unleashed a series of documents that could potentially embarrass, if not unseat, the leadership of one of the most powerful countries on the planet.
The new documents show a series of cables acknowledging that certain types of pollution throughout China simply aren’t being measured, and result for those which are measured are being covered up by officials. The cables reveal the depth of the pollution issue in the country of more than a billion people, and many people are asking how such information was kept quiet for so long.
“Air pollution in China has grown so bad that Chinese officials are acknowledging the challenge it presents, and various foreign scholars are offering alarming statistics about the financial and health costs it brings,” the documents, dating from 2006, said in part. “However, fine particle pollution -- which is deemed to be of highest concern for public health -- is not measured.”
The documents are dated 2006. It is not clear how much worse the pollution levels might be now.
“It is really a surprise to see these documents. I mean attitudes in the country mayhave changed in the interim, but even back then people were well aware that pollution was becoming an issue all over the world and it is very surprising to see a major government just ignore the evidence,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “To read these documents one would almost think that China had been totally free of pollution, or at least that was what the government was thinking and as we know in China whatever the government thinks is what is. This shows, though, that China may in fact have a serious issue with air pollution.”
While foreign visitors have often complained about the air quality in the country, China has always maintained that toxicity levels are normal and that many people simply aren’t used to Asian air.
“What this shows is that even in a country of more than a billion people, there are going to be serious pollution issues. That no matter how many people who have finding climate experts is always going to be an issue,” continued Hander. “However, they do appear to be dealing with it. I mean there aren’t any more recent documents and so that indicates that the problems have been more or less dealt with which probably means clear skies for the people of China.”
Officials in China made no comment on the leaks, but insiders say they were breathless with anger at the revelation.
“These documents show that depths to which governments are willing to cover things up, including covering up things which can be harmful to the people. That revelation alone is a shock to the system and could cause problems for a number of governments,” continued Hander. “The pollution itself could be the least of China’s problems now. This cover-up could cause serious issues for them and for other governments which have decided to keep the pollution problem quiet. Hopefully this serves as a lesson.”
Chinese weather forecasters reported no sun for the last two weeks as result of the annual monthly lunar eclipse.
