ANGELINA JOLIE EXPANDS HER ROLE IN THE UNITED NATIONS
October 5 2011
New York, NY – Many famous people make a serious effort to let it be known that they care about people. They join in on charity concerts, speak to crowds about the need to donate money, and generally try to use their celebrity to help. Usually they have the best of intentions, but very little of that effort trickles down to the people who need it.
That has certainly not been the case for Angelina Jolie who, despite having the manage a large family, a successful movie career, and a high profile relationship, has never abandoned her efforts to help the people of the world. That is clearly evident in her continued efforts as the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. Now Jolie has decided to not only continue with that work, but to actually expand her role and power level at the U.N. in hopes of affecting real change in the world, and hopefully rising to the top position someday in the future.
“Today three quarters of a million people are at risk of death in the next four months in the horn of Africa. This astonishing number of 'at risk' lives is the reason this is termed, 'a humanitarian crisis of a generation',” Jolie said while announcing her new expanded role. “The work we are doing needs to scale up to meet the needs of these individuals. How we continue to respond to this period of malnutrition and famine is going to define the work of NGO's, governments and international organisations working in the Horn of Africa. It will quite starkly determine whether a huge number of people live or die.”
Jolie has apparently also set her eyes on eventually taking over the role of Secretary General of the organization, though has admitted that that will be a few years down the road.
“Angie realizes that you don’t start at the top. She had to do a lot of bad movies before becoming an internationally renowned star of the silver screen. She had a leg up in the start, no doubt, but she still had to pay her dues. Remember, she was 23 by the time she had her big break. She paid her dues,” said a Jolie insider. “She is more than willing to do the same thing here. She will wait and bide her time and eventually the people in the UN will see the efforts being made and will put her in the proper position, the one she was destined to take. She frankly doesn’t even want it right now, not while her children are all still so young. Eventually though the time will come.”
Jolie has worked for the UN for the last decade. It’s not yet clear what her newly expanded role will entail, though it is believed to be still isolated to her work with the Refugee division of the organization.
“Remember, Angie is still only 36, though she looks 26, and so she has many years before she needs to seriously consider the role of Secretary-General. She has a lot of things to learn and a lot of connections to make but she is well on her way to making things happen. Hopefully, when the time is right, the people of the UN will see this for what it should be and put her in the proper position,” continued the insider. “Then she will be able to make real change. Everyone knows how powerful the Secretary-General is and she feels she can expand that power base even more, bring in countries that are usually argumentative and really change the world for the better. That it is her plan, the power is just the avenue toward change, not the goal unto itself.”
Jolie has cleared her slate of movie roles in order to further dig into her new position.
