ANOTHER FRIDAY, ANOTHER GUNFIGHT IN SARAJEVO

October 28 2011

Sarajevo, Bosnia – A gunman was injured, a police officer hospitalized, after an attack in downtown Sarajevo that sent shoppers fleeing for their lives.

The gunman, believed to be an Islamic extremist, opened fire in the central core of the city, near the United States Embassy, on a busy Friday. The man, Mevlid Jasarevic, is a Serbian citizen from a predominately Muslim city, Novi Pazar.siege of sarajevo

The city returned to normal business shortly after the attack with many just blowing off the assault. The country is of course no stranger to violence, having waged a bloody war for nearly three years. Most of the residents in the area affected by the shooting reported actually being happy to have had the distraction.

“It was a very slow day today and nothing much seemed to be happening and then we heard these gun shots and that changed things,” said Miroslav, an employee from a local coffee shop. “We had to duck down and make sure our customers were okay. It was very tense for a little while but we passed the time playing cards. Now there are police and other people all over and it is no longer a slow day. It makes time go faster.”

Miroslav was due to finish his shift a few hours after the shooting ended but ended up staying later because of the sudden surge in business.sarajevo

“This is Sarajevo. These things happen. It is strange actually that it hasn’t happened more often recently and it’s actually a bit of a relief that someone finally stepped up and did something. I was beginning to worry that the city had gotten dull, but that isn’t the case today,” said another local resident who preferred to remain anonymous. “Yes, we do not have shootings every Friday but often. This is the way of Sarajevo and we had gone far too long without some kind of madman shooting up the place. It is good to know we are back to normal.”

The last mass shooting in the city took place last month. No one was injured and the gunman was just angry at his girlfriend.

“We have taken this suspect into custody. Currently, he is being treated for his wounds at hospital and when he is released he will be processed and tried. These are not the types of actions we wish to have in our cities and we will not tolerate them,” said a police spokesperson. “We are hopeful that our officer will recover fully. We believe that this person did act alone and that the situation is entirely isolated.”sarajevo burning

A few hours after the shooting, locals began selling key chains with the shooter.

“It has been very long time since we have this type of shooting. Muslims do not come often to here and do these types of things anymore and so this is a big deal,” said a local merchant. “Ordinary shootings are not such big sellers, but these types of special incidents get attention from the world and that makes it a great opportunity for us. Hopefully he isn’t the last.”

No one in the Embassy even noticed the shooting had occurred until police knocked on their door.
