BERLUSCONI JUST TRYING TO GET A LITTLE SLEEP AMIDST ALL THE ECONOMIC CHAOS
November 7 2011
Rome , Italy – It’s been a hard year for Silvio Berlusconi, no one will deny that. Fighting economic chaos in his country, sex allegations against himself personally, and increasing calls for his resignation, the Italian leader has had it rough and things, it does not appear, do not seem to be getting much better.
Yesterday a rumour started to sweep across Italy that the 75-year old leader was on the verge of announcing his resignation from office. That was also the day Berlusconi was caught napping during a meeting with other EU leaders as they discussed his nation’s future, prompting many to believe that he had indeed started to check out, that he was ready to finally step down.
Not so, according to the man himself. Despite those rumours Berlusconi has said that he fully intends to stay in office for a while longer, but that he is going to have to set aside a little more time for sleep at the recommendation of his doctors and co-workers, acknowledging that crisis meeting are not the best place to take naps, being nudged awake all the time.
“Rumours of my resignation are baseless and I do not understand how they started circulating,” Berlusconi said simply before heading off for an afternoon snooze shortly after much of his coalition government collapsed.
Berlusconi reportedly took his name in a small bedroom he had installed next to the Prime Minister’s office, along with a glass of water and a small orange, his usual bedtime snack.
Berlusconi has also denied rumours that chaos currently facing his government and his country have caused him any sleepless nights, saying instead that his age and work schedule simply tire him out.
“If I were Berlusconi I would probably be tired as well. Aside from all the chaos in the country and in his personal life, he also has all his ladies to take care of and for a man of his age, well, that’s a lot of stuff and people to do. It’s totally understandable that he is a little off and a little sleepy at this stage,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “However, he has to look at it outside himself and assess whether or not he is capable of doing to job anymore, with or without naps. If he is not he should step down and let someone else take charge, for the good of the country at least.”
Berlusconi has been Prime minister since 2008. He is also one of the richest people in the world.
“He is balancing a lot of balls right now, possibly too many, and if he can’t right himself he is going to run into even more trouble. I mean he is at a stage in life where he could just nap all day if he wanted, but instead he has chosen to remain in power. That’s admirable but perhaps silly given his rest requirements,” continued Hander. “This stuff is not going to just go away. He is going to have to deal with it at some stage, whether he likes it or not, and this idea that he can just sleep through it, hoping that it will resolve itself, well that’s a little silly even for Berlusconi. He either needs to wake up or get out. Or he could just get more sleep at night, that would help.”
Berlusconi was apparently up all night last night with a bout of indigestion.
