BERLUSCONI SET TO RESIGN AND GET A LOT MORE SLEEP
November 8 2011
Rome, Italy – After months of scandal, years of instability, and a recent rebellion within the government it appears that Silvio Berlusconi will finally step down as Prime Minister of Italy. Billionaire Berlusconi has been at the centre of his nation’s continued hardship and on Tuesday was embarrassed after his government passed a new set austerity measures desired by the EU.
Berlusconi, one of the richest men in the world, will likely step down in the coming weeks, after which he will likely get a lot of sleep and have more time to spend with his many ladies.
Berlusconi has been in charge of the country since 2008, ruling for much of that time with a coalition government which in recent days has started to collapse. Berlusconi meanwhile had remained defiantly in charge, in between naps at least.
Opponents had been asking the Prime Minister to step aside for weeks.
“This is probably the best thing not only for Italy but also for the EU as a whole. Financial solvency in Italy is very important, not just because they are a significant member but also because any more major financial issues would likely have felled the entire union,” said Scrape TV European analyst Gillian Weismann. “That would not have been good and it appeared that Berlusconi in particular wasn’t all that interested in those problems. He appeared, frankly, to be kind of phasing out on occasion and getting a more than just a little sleepy.”
The Prime Minister made headlines last week when he fell asleep during an economic crisis meeting with other EU members. He claimed to have had a late night, which no one would have disputed.
Berlusconi has about $9 billion dollars which means that he will likely be okay without a job for a little while at least.
“The best thing about this, at least for him, is that he will get the kind of rest he really does need. He is getting old and spending all that time defending himself against assault charges, and creating new ones, alongside running a country has to be very trying. Eventually he was going to slip, to get a little tired and I guess he has reached his breaking point now,” continued Weismann. “It will be interesting to see if they remove the Prime Ministerial cot from the office. I guess that depends on who takes over.”
Berlusconi had a personal cot and cot carrier with him at all times, an expense charged to the public but not believed to have been a major cause of the financial crisis in the country. He is widely expected to purchase that cot back from the country, at a significant bargain.
“This is, by no means, the end of the crisis for the country. There is still a lot of work to be done to ensure that things get back on track but now at least they are going to be willing to work on those things rather than taking a lot of cat naps which really doesn’t help turn the economy around much at all,” continued Weismann. “Whoever takes charge will likely learn from his success and failures, and learn when and when not to go for a sleep.”
It’s not clear how many women Berlusconi will get as a private citizen.
