BRITAIN CRACKING DOWN ON ILLEGAL WHALE IMMIGRATION
December 6 2011
London, U.K. – Despite the historical irony, the issue of immigration, illegal or otherwise, has become a major issue in the United States. It has become a social and political lever, far removed from its roots, that will likely factor greatly in elections for years to come not only in the debate, but also in the votes. More people mean more votes.
The United States is, though, a country of immigrants. Other nations, particularly European countries, are having the same kinds immigration issues despite historically being exporters rather than importers. That, in turn, has created a great deal of tension across the continent. Perhaps no better example of that than the recent mass killing in Norway which, while perpetrated by a mad man, was rooted in immigration concerns.
There is perhaps no country more aggressively at war with immigration in Europe than the U.K. With wealth, glamour, and English it has become a focal point for immigrants looking for a new life, not all of them legal. That has caused significant tension in the nation and, like in the United States, become a potent political issue.
Now that issue has expanded beyond the island itself and into the waters surrounding it that have always been so important to the identity of the people with the sudden influx of mammals, namely whales, immigrating into the British Isles mostly illegally, and eating all the fish.
“We are now seeing a number of species far from home, and they probably will continue to recur with increasing frequency. They were both very big surprises: they are rarely seen even where the populations are known to exist,” said Peter Evans, director of the Sea Watch Foundation.
Other species such as dolphins and seals have also started to migrate north, all, it is believed, are seeking a better life in the increasingly warmer British Isles.
“These types of migrations are certainly hard on everyone. We have a very strong fisheries industry here and suddenly having this new competition in the field is going to make it very difficult to earn a living for a lot of our people. It is something we are actively investigating but not something against which we are willing to take decisive action as yet,” said a spokesperson for the U.K. government. “We know they are illegals but there are limitations in the way in which we deal with them.”
The government has traditionally taken a similar line when dealing with immigration on the human kind.
“We are always concerned when we see illegal immigration into the country or the waters surrounding it and we are consulting with experts on how best to deal with the situation. When we have a resolution it will be made public,” continued the spokesperson. “There are no plans on the table to allow these individuals to become citizens without due process. They cannot simply jump the line because they are cetaceans. That is not the policy of the British government and never will be. All individuals wishing to enter the United Kingdom must follow the proper procedures.”
None of the recent visitors are believed to even have passports.
