CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER UNABLE TO AFFORD NEW CLOTHES FOR HIS FAMILY
December 14 2011
Ottawa, Canada – Everyone knows that the economy has been hard on people in just about every sector. Homes have been lost, jobs have vanished, and liquidity has all but evaporated but still, things aren’t nearly as bad as they could be, or as bad as they have been in the past.
Of all the major western nations wrapped up in the economic chaos only a few have been able to weather the storm effectively, none more so than Canada. With natural resources aplenty and a solid banking system, the country has become a model for many trying to restore not only value but also confidence in the economic system. Things haven’t been perfect in the country, but in comparison to her peers, Canada has been soaring.
Well, that’s what people believed until the Prime Minister released his new Christmas card. That card showed PM Stephen Harper, his wife Laureen, and two children in front of a fireplace wearing the same clothes they wore in their card the year before. That has brought the ire and concern from press across Canada, concerned about the financial state of the leader of the nation and what it could mean for his future as Prime Minister.
“The backdrop is different — a garland-laced fireplace this year, an outdoor scene with 24 Sussex Dr. behind them last year. But the Prime Minister is sporting the same grey sweater and red-striped shirt. Son Ben is in a white shirt, daughter Rachel in a similar-looking blouse with the same bracelets adorning her wrist. Only wife Laureen appears to have changed outfits and hairstyle from one year to the next,” reported the Toronto Star.
Harper was just recently re-elected to a four year term which does carry with it a salary sufficient to purchase new clothing for a family of four.
The apparent lack of funds has concerned many observers not only with the reality of life in Canada, but also how such limited funds might also make the Prime Minister susceptible to unscrupulous persons.
“It’s hard to believe that the Prime Minister doesn’t have enough money to buy new clothes. It could be that he is trying to appeal to ordinary Canadians, show them that he isn’t above them in any way and that he isn’t splurging while they are struggling, but of course it comes off as the opposite,” said a Canadian government insider. “The opposition is going to have a field day with this. Harper is already not particularly well liked, not even by the majority of Canada actually, and this is just going to give his critics more ammunition to hit him with.”
It’s not clear if most of the money Harper makes is being spent on his wife, the only one with new clothes, or perhaps being gambled away or spent in the rippers in the Ottawa area.
“No one wants a poor Prime Minister. I mean he has to go to conferences with other leaders all the time and he is representing the country and all Canadians. Just now we are starting to emerge from our position as an international gag and then Harper goes around wearing the same clothes all over the place. I hope at least they are clean,” continued the insider. “I remember he showed up at a G8 conference with only one suit one year and people just wanted to stay away from him. His shirts were all wrinkled from washing them in the sink, it was a disgrace. Hopefully at least he buys some new clothes for his kids, they will outgrow them eventually.”
Harper was also called out at the recent Commonwealth meeting in Australia and given a fresh pair of socks by a representative for the Queen.
