EGYPT HITTING UP WOMEN LIKE CRAZY IN NEW REGIME
December 18 2011
Cairo, Egypt – Anyone who believed that the revolution in Egypt earlier this year was the end to the problems in the country was really kind of delusional. The problems in Egypt, which were no doubt created by decades of totalitarian rule, were not going to be resolved by ousting those dictators. It was a start, a good one, but not a finish, not by a long shot.
That is very evident today as riots continue to break out across the country, riots that in theory are efforts to protest the military regime which was ushered into power by the previous uprising. Buildings on fire, injured protestors, and a whole lot of arrests are reminiscent of that previous uprising, though this time with a much darker edge.
Of particular concern to outsiders is the apparent targeting of women partaking in the protests. While men are certainly being arrested, the number of women, and the abuse they appear to be suffering at the hands of police, is dramatically outnumbering the violence against males, raising concerns that women are going to continue to suffer under the new regime, especially if they continue to not do what men tell them to do.
“The army council must go. They must give us freedom. We have earned this freedom and it must be given to us and this is why we protest,” said a local man who claimed to speak for his whole family, especially his wife.
Similar sentiments have been expressed across the country with most people simply not like being beaten with truncheons are having their clothes ripped off and being dragged down the street.
Women, particularly in a religiously conservative country such as Egypt, are particularly agitated by having their clothes ripped away and being dragged by their hair.
“This is certainly not the model for democracy and plurality that people had envisioned for Egypt when those riots first erupted. It was a great thing to watch, seeing them take back their country, but this is certainly not what anyone had in mind. Well, maybe the military, but not many other people,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “This, though, is the early days. People in that nation still need to learn what democracy means and inevitably they will evolve their own version of it. It remains to be seen if that will involve ripping off women’s clothes in public and dragging them down the street, which hopefully it won’t, but you never know. Democracy is different all over the place.”
Egypt does have a rule about wearing clothes in polling booths, which is pretty standard for most democracies. Brazil is the one prominent exception.
“Look, people are going to be upset when things aren’t going their way and it’s pretty obvious that things have not gone perfectly in Egypt so far. That sucks, but you can’t expect magic. You can certainly expect to not be dragged down the street or stomped by police, but not perfection,” continued Gershwin. “Unfortunately a lot of women in Egypt just don’t understand democracy, even less then the men, which I guess makes sense. They seem to be expecting something that democracy just can’t deliver, at least not this quickly, and that is leading to these hair pulling incidents. It sucks, but eventually they will learn. Everyone will.”
Many women are still coming out on Egyptian streets, apparently not having learned quite yet.
