GADDAFI’S DAUGHTER RALLIES FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO OVERTHROW NEW LIBYAN REGIME
December 2 2011
Algiers, Algeria – For most international observers the collapse of the Libyan regime and death of Muammar Gaddafi was about as shocking an event as ever could have been expected. Yes, the Libyan people weren’t happy and hadn’t been for a long time but Gaddafi had been such a staple of the region, and of global politics, it was hard to imagine that he would ever go away, especially not in such a blaze of glory.
Go away is exactly what Gaddafi did though and the world, including Libya, is rapidly adjusting to a world without a Gaddafi in charge, something that a year ago couldn’t have been imagined. Though that may not last for long.
Aisha Gaddafi, the daughter of the dead leader, has called on supporters to rise against the interim government that ousted her father and urged them to retake the country for the family. Thus far, her calls have mostly fallen flat but a recent surge in support from close family members and a handful of friends have given the younger Gaddafi the will to push on in her efforts to retake her nation.
“My father has not left, he is always among us. Don't forget the orders of your father urging you to continue fighting, even if you no longer hear his voice,” said Gaddafi in a conversation with supporters.
Gaddafi has been in Algeria since the outbreak of fighting, claiming refugee status, something which may be imperiled should she continue to rebel against the new Libyan government.
A number of Gaddafi family members fled to Algeria during the crisis, a group which is now forming the power base for the potential revolution.
“I doubt very much that Aisha Gaddafi will be able to garner the type of support her father had and even that, obviously, was not enough. I mean if you are going for the same amount of support as her father had you aren’t aiming very high. It didn’t do much for him in the end,” said Scrape TV African analyst Claude Contee. “To really engage a power base to encourage a revolution you really do need to go outside your immediate family, perhaps bring in some cousins and aunts and uncles. If possible even have them bring in their friends and family members, that’s where you start to develop a strong basis for a revolution.”
Outside family and friends, Muammar Gaddafi also had planes, tanks, and lots of guns, something Aisha does not appear to have.
“Taking over a country is a difficult thing, something the rebels showed the Gaddafi’s very clearly over the last few months. If she has one advantage it is that they are weakened right now, susceptible, and that could help out her effort but there is no guarantee, but then there never is in revolution,” continued Contee. “If she is going to push forward with this she is going to have to realize that it is going to be a tough road and there will be a lot of hardships. Luckily she does appear to have the support of her friends and family, obviously, and that will help through the long, hard nights ahead. Hopefully more than it helped her father at least.”
Aisha Gaddafi has urged supporters to rally at the house she is staying at.
