GREECE DOESN’T REALLY WANT BAILOUT MONEY AFTER ALL
November 1 2011
Athens, Greece – For months pretty much the entire European Union has lived the saga of Greece. The failure of the Greek economy, which has created economic chaos throughout the world and violence across the country, has been just about the only thing anyone in the region has been thinking about.
Finally, last week, EU officials found a potential resolution that would bailout the Greeks and keep them afloat at least for a little while longer. That news was greeted warmly by investors around the world but, as has often happened in this situation, things have not gone as easily as had been predicted.
Today, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said that the bailout package, so carefully nurtured by other members of the EU, would face a referendum instead of just being accepted outright, causing political chaos in the country and irritating other member states who are becomingly increasingly convinced that the Greeks just don’t want their money and pretty soon, well, pretty soon they will just stop offering.
“The bailout does come with conditions and that is the big issue for the government. It’s really a matter of whether or not they will be able to survive having accepted those conditions. The Greek people are really agitated and further austerity measures aren’t going to help that frustration any, and that’s it what they are thinking,” said an EU insider. “It could also be that something else is going on, that maybe they feel that our money just isn’t good enough for them. If that is the case that would be too bad because our money is as good as anyone else’s and we really are here just trying to help them out but they will do what they need to do.”
Some prominent politicians, including the leader of the official German opposition party, expressed frustration with the Greek decision.
Most of the money in the bailout has come from Germany.
“This is really a big deal for the entire Euro zone. We can also see the impact of the decision on the rest of the world with stocks dropping like rocks all over the place. It’s really an irrational decision in some ways, beggars can’t be choosers and the like, and that is being felt the world over,” said Scrape TV European analyst Gillian Weismann. “If they continue like this I think, frankly, that eventually the rest of EU will just stop offering. There are really only so many times you can offer before you have to finally give up, and I would bet that the EU is pretty close to that point now.”
It’s not clear what the Greeks will do for money should the bailout be rejected.
“They are there with money in their hand offering it to the Greek government and the Greek people and still they are rejecting it, rejecting it outright essentially. There are good reasons for putting it to a referendum but still, they have no money really and this could well be their last chance,” continued Weismann. “Eventually the other countries in the Union will get sick of offering and by then, even if they have changed their mind, well it will just be too late. The money just won’t be there forever.”
Greek officials also rejected an offer by Turkey to mow the grass on their side of the border, angering lawmakers in that country.
