HILLARY CLINTON HOPING FOR CIVIL WAR IN SYRIA
November 19 2011
Washington, D.C. – Unlike the revolutions throughout much of the Arab world that brought so much success, the situation in Syria has essentially reached a stalemate. Protestors continue to stand up to the government, emboldened in many ways by the crackdown, and the government has stood strong, refusing to bend to the will of the people, resulting in a lot more bloodshed.
While these revolts have been far from easy, best evidenced by Libya, there was always at least shifts in momentum, which showed that something outside mass slaughter was happening. Not so in Syria. There are no territorial shifts, there is no organized rebel group, there is really no evidence of anything happening aside from a lot of death.
That, alongside a handful of other factors, has made Syria a complicated situation for the outside world. There is no group to support, no real engagement to be had, and so blood spills on the streets without regard. However there is potential, at least according to the United States, especially if the nation descends into Civil War which is exactly what U.S. Secretary of State is hoping happens sooner rather than later.
“I think there could be a civil war with a very determined and well-armed and eventually well-financed opposition that is, if not directed by, certainly influenced by
defectors from the army,” said Hillary Clinton during an interview in Indonesia. “We're already seeing that, something that we hate to see because we are in favor of a peaceful protest and a nonviolent opposition.”
Clinton also reiterated that there was no option for outside intervention in Syria, something many officials said before organizing against Libya.
Thus far political pressure in the form of sanctions and from political allies such as Turkey have done little to quell the violence, which many are hoping will eventually prompt a full-fledged revolution.
“There is what people can say on the record and what they say behind closed doors. Really, the best thing for this situation would be for an organized rebellion. It’s pretty clear that asking nicely isn’t going to work, that has been tried over and over again and it just isn’t happening just like it didn’t in Libya,” said a U.S. official on the condition of anonymity. “The best thing for the people of Syria, as the U.S. sees it, would be to start a full on rebellion, which would essentially be a Civil War. Clinton can’t say that publicly but without one there would be no impetus to act.”
It’s not yet clear what the U.S. would have to gain by attacking Syria aside from diminishing Iranian influence in the area. Unlike Libya, Syria has little oil.
“By saying they don’t want a Civil War they are essentially saying they want one. In one part of the statement they say they don’t want it, and then in the next they are giving details on how to actually get a war going, so the desire is pretty clear,” continued the insider. “If they didn’t want a Civil War Clinton would just say that, but she isn’t saying that, which means she wants one. That’s Clinton though, she’s always in favour of Civil War. You should have heard her when she was First Lady. Couldn’t stop talking about it.”
Clinton also suggested that protestors don’t go to the Iraqi border to pick up weapons.
