IRAN PLEDGES WARSHIPS, TUGBOATS ALONG THE U.S. COASTLINE

September 28 2011

Tehran, Iran – For centuries, sea power has been the standard for military power. Even in the modern era where aircraft dominate the battlefield, they do so with the support of sea power. No matter what has changed in the last century, navies remain the cornerstone of any powerful military, something Iran knows all too well and is determined the show the United States.navy destroyers

In a potentially provocative statement, the Rear Admiral of Iranian Navy has vowed to park a fleet of warships off the coast of the United States to show their long-time rival that not only do they have the ability to confront them, but also that they are not scared of the Americans. While the Admiral did not detail the plans for the deployment, it’s believed likely that a significant portion of the nation’s trawlers and tugboats would be involved in such an operation.

Like the arrogant powers that are present near our marine borders, we will also have a powerful presence close to American marine borders,” Rear Adm. Habibollah Sayyari told the IRNA news agency.

Iran has recently been bolstering its naval capabilities, upgrading from traditional Aryan style canoes and rafts.ahmadinejead

The U.S. has not officially responded to the threat but has traditionally not been fond of foreign countries parking warships along its coastline.

“It certainly is a provocative move, and a slightly irrational one, so we will have to see whether or not it actually happens. With all those nukes in development, launching a massive naval deployment may not be fiscally viable for the country,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “Moving the kind of fleet that would be required across the distance would be very expensive. Remember that Iran doesn’t have its own oil production, and ships of that size would require multiple refuelling, requiring a lot of stops along the way, and that is a major logistical issue. If they have overcome that, though, then it might not be long before we see Iranian vessels off the coast of New York or Los Angeles.”

It’s believed likely that seeing those vessels from the coastline would be difficult without very good binoculars.canoe

“The statement is more than likely just sabre rattling. Iran has a lot of other issues to deal with right now without having the deal with provoking the largest military the world has ever seen. Of course if they do do it they could set themselves up as one of the major naval powers on the planet, provided the U.S. doesn’t sink the ships with an onslaught of rocks and sticks,” continued Martinez. “Iran does, however, have a small collection of cruise missiles which they could easily transport across to the coastline and detonate. I mean the explosion would be small, but the fear it would create would be much greater. That is assuming that they don’t run afoul of fishermen on their way in, those coastal fishermen are really the first line of defence.”

Iran deployed ten tugboats in the Caspian Sea shortly after the announcement.
