IRAQI PRIME MINISTER PROMISES RIVERS OF BLOOD WITH U.S. FORCES GONE

December 27 2011

Baghdad, Iraq – It has been a long, hard path to something resembling peace in Iraq, but it now appears that the nation finally has a chance. Without a brutal dictator gone, insurgents under control, and no foreign military power walking the streets it appears, on the surface at least, that Iraq has the chance at peace for which it has longed for decades.iraq violence

Not so fast though, at least according to the Prime Minister of the country, Nouri al-Maliki, who has warned that efforts to create an autonomous Sunni region within the country will not only go badly, but likely massive violence.

Specifically, al-Maliki has promised rivers of blood if the country goes ahead with the plan to create the new region which he feels will divide the nation and force the hand of the new military and government in the country.

“We cannot create regions on a sectarian basis. Doing this would lead to the dividing of Iraq and rivers of blood,” said al-Maliki last week.

Many Sunnis in the central part of the country have called for their own autonomous region, made up of the provinces of Salahuddin, Diyala and Anbar, to try and combat what they feel is marginalization by the Shiite government.

Al-Maliki has in the past rejected efforts to better integrate Sunni’s into the government, saying in effect that they were not worthy of such positions, which has led to the current impasse and the threats.nouri al-maliki

“Rarely do we hear these types of threats played against the people in such a public way. I mean ‘rivers of blood’ is a little dramatic, honestly. It sounds really bad but it is such a common phrase in the Middle East that it has basically lost all meaning. That said, the real concern is the motivation behind it. If the Iraqi government is indeed willing to slaughter all the Sunnis in order to keep order, there could be a problem,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “I mean look, the United States did not fight all this time, spend all this money and manpower and lives, just to enable genocide. At least I’m pretty sure they didn’t. That doesn’t seem like something the United States would do. Typically they try to avoid those types of situations, not create them.”

Officially, the United States had been trying to create peace in the country, but very little of what goes on behind closed doors is ever revealed to the public.nouri al-maliki

“I’m sure when President Obama ordered the troops out of Iraq the last thing he wanted was the Prime Minister threatening to slaughter civilians. That is part of the reason they went in there in the first place, and now it appears to be happening again. Yes, the whole ‘rivers of blood’ cliché doesn’t really hold much weight, but you never know,” continued Gershwin. “I doubt we will have a Saddam Hussein type of situation again, but you never know. I mean as much of a cliché as it has become, someday someone might actually want to create rivers of blood and that would be a pretty dark day. Hopefully that doesn’t happen here, that would suck, especially after so much effort by so many people.”

Al-Maliki has also promised rivers of blood at home for a variety of reasons including laundry not being done and cold dinner. He has still not acted on any of those threats.
