ISRAEL DOES STUFF TO PALESTINIAN BOATS OR SOMETHING
November 4 2011
Jerusalem, Israel – Every now and then the world enjoys a kind of calm, not quite a peace, but a calm in the tensions between the Palestinians and the Israelis. During those times there are no rocket attacks or razing of settlements, no protestors on the streets throwing rocks and no soldiers firing rubber bullets. Those periods come, every now and then.
That time is not now. While it’s true that the more extreme examples of tensions aren’t happening right now, with major movements made towards Palestinian statehood the last thing in the region that is happening is peace. Tensions are high, threatening to overflow, which they inevitably do in the region.
That tension almost did boil over on Friday when two boats approached the military blockade off the coast of the Gaza Strip. The vessels were halted and boarded, and no one was hurt, but the incident has highlighted the increased tension in the region or something as the two sides continue to aggravate one another and get lots of front page headlines.
“The Israel Navy soldiers operated as planned, and took every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of the activists onboard the vessels as well as themselves,” said a statement from the IDF (Israeli Defence Force).
Palestinian officials had no comment, though no one really thought to ask what they thought anyway.
It’s not clear what happened to the ships or the goods on board and no one could really be bothered to find out one way or the other.
Most supplies are sent overland into Gaza but occasionally boats try to break the blockade in the region, creating headlines for both sides.
“Realistically if this were just about getting supplies to the area there is a much better way of doing it, but that isn’t really what this is about. Protesting the blockade is the order of the day and they certainly accomplished that, protesting it, though not much beyond that I guess,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “It’s really tough to see what either side gains from this blockade aside from headlines, but I guess it’s all really just a matter of what it is you are trying to accomplish. That’s the real question we have to ask.”
Neither side has really stated a long term goal for maintaining or trying to run the blockade.
“It’s pretty clear from this incident that the tensions over the blockade are going to continue for a while longer and that any efforts to get rid of it or to stop people from trying to get rid of it just isn’t going to work anytime soon. I mean we will see, I guess, eventually,” continued Gershwin. “It’s hard to predict exactly what is going on here especially when it’s so hard to really get worked up about it. I mean, I don’t know. It’s just hard sometimes to really get worked up about the same thing over and over and over again, though they do try. You have to give them credit for that.”
Other things happened in the region as well throughout Friday.
