LATEST POLL NUMBERS SHOW DECLINE FOR SYRIA’S ASSAD

October 26 2011

Damascus, Syria – These are certainly tough and uncertain times in the Middle East, not just for the people of the region but also for the leadership. With the fall of Muammar Gaddafi the first real obstacle in the Arab uprisings that began earlier this year is clear, potentially allowing for a new surge and the removal of even more oligarchs.gaddafi screwy

The most prominent focus of that uprising currently is Syrian President Bashar al-Assad whose country has been in turmoil for months, resulting in brutal crackdowns and condemnation from the rest of the world. Thus far, though, Assad seem fairly stable even in an unstable position but with Gaddafi gone he most certainly has to be concerned about the emotional state of his nation, inspired perhaps by others’ success.

To wit, a recent poll has shown a massive decline in popularity for the leader, putting him at an all time low across the country and the region, leading many to believe that his time may in fact may be at an end. Assad, though, has remained fervent in his desire to stay in power and shown his willingness to do whatever it takes to accomplish that end.

"What emerges in stark relief from the results of this poll is the degree to which the Syrian government of Bashar Al Assad has become isolated and is looked on with near universal disfavor across the entire world,” the survey concluded.syrian riots

Assad has been in power since 2000, taking over for his late father. At least 3000 have been killed in recent troubles, relatively high numbers for the country.

“It’s become readily apparent that what Arab leaders could get away with a few decades ago simply doesn’t fly today. The times have changed and Assad, and other leaders, would do well to heed that. The simple truth is that killing protestors and dissidents on this scale just doesn’t work as well today as it did for his father and he needs to realize that,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “There is very little chance that we will see military intervention like we saw in Libya but that is not the end of the problems. It has become clear that many people in Syria are simply not happy with Assad’s rule, as evidence by the revolt and of course the polling. He may have been able to ignore the blood in the streets, but polling, well polling never lies.”bashar al assad

Assad’s popularity is down to about 94 percent, a 2 percent drop despite thousands of dead who likely would have opposed him.

“Assad really does need to see this for what it is. He should perhaps take the lesson from his peers in Africa and get out while the getting is good. What they experienced there, that massive decline in popularity, didn’t exactly allow them to coast gracefully into retirement and as a young man Assad should really be thinking about his future,” continued Gershwin. “I would guess, though, that he will try to hold onto power as long as possible and that will kill his polling numbers. The more bodies they pile up in the streets, the lower his numbers will dip. People get sick of wading around in human remains after a while and that will show in the polls.”

A poll conducted by the Syrian government showed an increase in popularity for the President, with margin of error included.
