MASSIVE PROTESTS LOOKING FOR OUSTER NOT WHAT PUTIN HAD IN MIND
December 10 2011
Moscow, Russia – To the outside world Russia and Vladimir Putin are essentially one. Not since Stalin had one man held such sway over the grand old Russian Bear, the collective imaginations of both Russians and outsiders, and so relished his reign at the top. Putin is the face of modern Russia, a nation he did essentially build and like Uncle Joe before him, it appeared that Putin would only leave when death took him.
That, in fact, was essentially what Putin had primed himself for. Altering the constitution so that he could retake the Presidency and run the country in the open was just the first step in a plan to fully reshape Russia. Now though, things have changed. Only a week after a disastrous election, thousands of protestors are flooding the streets of every major city calling for Putin’s ouster which is certainly not what he had in mind.
Unbowed though, Putin has vowed to stay in charge of his nation no matter the cost, likely no matter how much political or real blood must be spilled, no matter who has to be hurt in the process.
“This was certainly not what we had in mind when we started the latest election campaign and it is a little disappointing but we will stay the course. We expected a few dissenters, we do have political opponents, but no one expected thousands of people in the streets. It is a little disheartening but the Prime Minister is staying strong,” said a spokesperson for the Kremlin. “He really wants to assure people of that, that he is staying strong. He is upset about the protests but he is not overly upset. He will get through this, so too will Russia.”
Much of the protest has revolved around the controversial parliamentary elections from last week which many say were rigged, and they probably were but not more so than the average in Russia.
Putin was considered a lock to win the Presidency back next year which could put him in office until 2024, or later if he changes the rules again.
“The biggest story here is that Russians don’t normally protest their government. Well, they did that one time and that was a big deal but they don’t do it on a regular basis and that is what’s really telling here. It doesn’t matter if they are right, not in Russia, what matters is that they aren’t taking it,” said Scrape TV European analyst Gillian Weismann. “Normally Russians would take it and the fact that they aren’t this time, that’s a big deal and it has to be a bitter pill for Putin to take.”
At first Putin apparently believed the crowds were there to cheer him before he realized they were shouting for his ouster.
“I’m sure, totally sure, that they are being honest about their disappointment. I’m absolutely sure that this is not what they had intended going into the election season and it certainly doesn’t bode well for their chances going forward. I mean they will win, but not by a whole lot,” continued Weismann. “I mean they better win because they are going to stay in power regardless. If the people are smart they will give them what they want so that they aren’t forced to just take it. That would likely not end well for anyone, well Putin but not anyone else.”
President Dmitry Medvedev has apparently been making sure that Putin is comfortable, making him tea and rubbing his tired feet.
