MEXICAN GANG MAKES A HUGE SPLASH WITH DOZENS OF KILLINGS
October 9 2011
Mexico City, Mexico – It’s always hard to be the new guy on the block and there are usually two ways of dealing with it. You either play it quiet, make friends, and slowly but surely become members of the team or you make a big splash and make everyone pay attention, positive or negative.
In the ongoing drug war in Mexico a new gang decided on the latter option, opening up business with a splash that left at least 32 people dead. The new gang, the Zetas, is also believed to be responsible for 35 deaths back in September, the bodies dumped on a busy street. In only a few weeks the new group has firmly established themselves amongst the elite of drug gangs in the country, though already a few more established gangs are doubting that they will be able to keep up the pace.
“I been in this for a long time and I tell you that this thing won’t keep happening. You can’t do this kind of thing all the time, it just ain’t good for business. It’s gonna get them lots of attention but killing people like this, it just ain’t a sustainable business model,” said a member of a rival gang. “They can keep doing this for a little while but it will go away. Killing dealers and other people just don’t work in the big picture and all you know. They got to relax some.”
The Zetas have become notorious for the public displays of their killings, many of which have been posted on the web and at busy intersections. It’s believed the gang is run by a collection of former soldiers.
The gang has been at war with La Familia, a gang which has been around for a good number of years.
“The gang activity in the country has certainly increased in last few years and that has put many people on guard. In the long term these high profile killings are not good, they aren’t good for gang doing them or for any other gang. That has been proven over and over again not just in Mexico but all over the world,” said Scrape TV Crime analyst Willard Weston. “It shows they are tough but it also brings lot of attention. When motorists have to drive through bodies or kids have to step over skulls to go to school that tends to alienate the people and the people put pressure on the government, and the government cracks down on the gangs. It happens all the time and will here, even though it’s Mexico.”
The government has done little in the past to crack down on the gangs though pressure is building.
“Eventually something will have to happen and that is bad news for all gangs in the country. These new guys, the Zetas, if they continue along these lines the government may be forced to do something. There are only so many heads rolling around dance floors or people hanging from bridges that the public will take. They are probably getting close to that limit about now,” continued Weston. “Bodies are rarely good for business and there are a lot of bodies in Mexico right now. I mean some people will like it, especially morticians, but that hardly makes up for the loss they will eventually suffer. And none of these gangs, so far as I know, are actively involved in the mortuary business though that could be a good opportunity for them if the drug thing dries up.”
The Zetas reportedly plan on killing on a weekly basis rather than in bunches going forward.
