MIKHAIL GORBACHEV FINALLY STARTING A COUP HE CAN CALL HIS OWN

December 7 2011

Moscow, Russia – There is one man probably more responsible for modern Russia than any other. His name is not Putin, or Medvedev, it is Gorbachev. Iconic in his time, the last leader of the Soviet Union has been largely isolated from the nation he helped to create. His influence has diminished to almost nothing, his standing in the political hierarchy at zero, but the old man has not been willing to go away quietly.mikhail gorbachev

Now 80-years old, Gorbachev has remained a bit of a thorn in the side of the current leadership in the country and an inspiration to a small number of people who still remember his actions in the 1980’s. Gorbachev though has never been satisfied with his retiree status and now, with controversy starting to peak over last week’s parliamentary elections in country, he has decided to make his move.

Amidst accusations from opponents, and growing unease from voters, that the election process had been corrupted Gorbachev has stepped out and called on the nation’s leaders to nullify the results and hold a new election. While that outcome does seem unlikely, Gorbachev’s actions to side with the popular opinion will likely push his status in the country and possibly pave a way for another run at the leadership next year or, possibly, become the lead voice in a new Russian Revolution.

“More and more people are starting to believe that the election results are not fair," Gorbachev told Interfax. "I believe that ignoring public opinion discredits the authorities and destabilizes the situation.”gorbachev

It’s not clear if he actually investigated the reports himself, or even if he had someone investigate them for him, but like any seasoned politician he no doubt has started to smell blood in the water.

With reports of ballot stuffing and other falsifications, which resulted in a thin majority for the once dominant United Russia party, protests have broken out in major cities across the nation, with Gorbachev urging them on.

“It’s pretty clear that people are dissatisfied with the government as is. Even if the vote itself was valid it does amount to a grow dislike of the status quo, and the fact that people won’t take the government at their word is even more damning on the state of things right now,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “When people like their government they vote for them and don’t accuse them of cheating in elections, and generally don’t go out to protest against them. All of that combined is clear evidence that something is awry in Russian society, and Gorbachev is in the perfect position to exploit that, which of course was probably his plan all along.”putin angry

More than 50,000 troops have been deployed to quell the protests since the election of Friday.

“It has been a long con to be sure. Twenty years is a long time to wait for your opportunity to get back at the people who pushed you out of office, but he has been patient and it appears to be on the verge of paying off,” continued Hander. “Putin himself may not have been involved with that coup all those years ago, but he represents the people who were and by revenging himself on Putin he is getting back at all of them, which will give him a new power base and help him remake Russia in his own image.”

Putin has now officially registered himself as a candidate in next year’s election. Gorbachev has not made his plans clear.
