NATO TELLS PAKISTAN TO CHILL AFTER IT KILLS A WHOLE LOT OF THEIR SOLDIERS
November 26 2011
Islamabad, Pakistan – At least 28 Pakistani soldiers have been killed after an accidental NATO strike near the Afghan border. While details are scarce at this stage, it appears that NATO aircraft attacked two military outposts, an incident which has prompted Pakistan to close needed supply routes into Afghanistan.
The incident is the worst yet of that type since the war in Afghanistan began in 2001 and comes at a delicate time in the relationship between the United States and Pakistan, a relationship which has been under stress since the killing of Osama bin Laden earlier this year.
The closed supply routes provide the allied forces with about half the shipments needed to continue waging the war. While most expect that the relationship will eventually be resolved and that the supply route will eventually be reopened, NATO forces are preparing for the possibility that the route will remain closed by planning a fresh attack on Pakistani forces to force them to reopen the routes.
“Close air support was called in, in the development of the tactical situation, and it is what highly likely caused the Pakistan casualties. We are aware that Pakistani soldiers perished. We don't know the size, the magnitude,” said General Carsten Jacobson of the International Security Assistance Force.
Pakistani officials were a little bit harsher in their response to the attack. It’s not clear why the outposts were targeted but is believed likely that NATO did it deliberately for whatever reason.
It’s not clear how many of the dead were working in league with the Taliban, but it was likely a large percentage.
“This is certainly not a good development and one that could harm the long term success of the mission in Afghanistan. I mean, the longer term success, like longer than it’s been, and that probably isn’t a good thing, or it’s nothing at all in terms of extending the time there,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “It has certainly angered the Pakistanis but recently they seem to be getting mad about everything so that hardly warrants any real concern. I mean there’s only so many times you can cry wolf, or sheep, infidel or whatever it is they have there.”
U.S. officials have stopped short of commenting on the incident but have, in the past, indicated that they would be willing to attack anyone interrupting the supply lines, Taliban or just Taliban related.
“Look, they are already deeply invested in this thing. They’ve spent billions of dollars and killed a whole lot of people to get to this point so you can be pretty sure that they aren’t going to just let a few random deaths uncouple the whole thing. Pakistani or whatever, they all kind of wash together in the end,” continued Martinez. “Obviously the reaction would be a little different if the Pakistanis killed 28 Americans but that isn’t likely to happen. Even if they had intelligence on where the American bases were, I mean, well they could try but that likely wouldn’t happen. The Pakistanis should just man up. There’s plenty of people to replace the dead ones.”
The borders are still closed as of this writing.
