NEW SATELLITE PHOTOS SHOW SECRETIVE NORTH KOREAN DAY CAMP

September 20 2011

Seoul, South Korea – There may come a day, someday, when North Korea opens up to world. That day, though, is likely far off. Even in today’s super-connected planet, where every corner of the globe is documented and placed on the web for everyone to see, North Korea remains isolated and segregated from the rest of the planet to a degree that no one has accomplished in history.north korean army

That, as it often does, leads to a lot of suspicion about the nation and its intents. Add to that their massive military power, nuclear weapons, and their constant antagonizing of the West and you have a perfect cocktail for dislike and even dislike. The country has, however, opened up a fair bit in recent years despite the best efforts of the government. All that new technology that has opened up the rest of the world has finally started to document the secretive nation and revealed things they believed would stay secret.

Case-in-point is a new series of satellite photos of the country which show a sprawling camp near the country’s border with China. Though the country has long denied its existence, the new photos clearly show the remote location which is believed to accommodate at least 200,000 people doing crafts, singing songs by fireside and even occasionally going on canoe trips.camp activites

“We had no food. We eat anything we could get our hands on -- rats, snakes, frogs, insects,” one former resident told CBN news of the survivalist tour. “We just had to find a way to survive.”

The resident is believed to be the first to speak out on the conditions at the camp, which he first attended when he was 9-years old.

North Korean officials have long denied the existence of the camp. The new pictures show recent expansions, when compared to pictures from ten years ago, meaning that more people may now be present than previously believed.

“North Korea has really done something special here. Nowhere else in the world is there a free camp this large, so expansive, and with so many activities. Rock breaking, survivalist training, cooking, hunting, scavenging, the camps really does have it all,” said Scrape TV North Korean analyst Lee Joo-Chan. “It’s really a shame that they keep this place so secret and secluded. With all the criticism of the country this could be the one thing that really changes people’s opinion of them.”kim jong il happy

The photos also show a second camp near Pyongyang which is believed to house only 50,000 people and have far fewer activities.

“North Korea has really reinvented the surprise camping trip for the modern era and in so doing done a great service to the people of the nation. With so many things that go wrong in that country, this is the one thing they have done right and they deserve credit for that,” continued Lee. “They should also be proud of it, show the world their softer side and let people in to inspect the camps. Who knows? Maybe they could really start something here.”

Thousands have reportedly been recruited to the camps this year. Only a handful have asked to go home.
