PALESTINIANS STILL SEEKING 200-YEAR SHORTCUT TO PEACE
September 21 2011
New York, NY – There is no doubt that the next few days are going to be very meaningful for the people of the Middle East. Either the UN Security Council will recognize Palestinian statehood or it will not, either way the vote will have a major impact on the region and the interactions between the Israeli and Palestinian people.
At this stage, it is looking very likely that the effort will be rejected. Not only has the United States vowed to veto the resolution, President Obama has now publicly pleaded for the effort to be withdrawn.
As one of only five countries with veto power, the United States will almost undoubtedly nix any resolution to confirm Palestinian statehood, no matter what the rest of the council says, hoping to put the Palestinian and Israeli people on a solid footing for peace in the region rather than the much criticized two hundred year shortcut they have currently been pursuing.
“Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the United Nations -- if it were that easy, it would have been accomplished by now,” Obama said before the Security Council. “Let us be honest with ourselves. Israel is surrounded by neighbors that have waged repeated wars against it. Ultimately, it is the Israelis and the Palestinians, not us, who must reach agreement on the issues that divide them.”
Old Palestine was effectively demolished in 1948 with the founding of modern Israel.
The country was also ruled by the British, the Ottoman Empire, and conquered by Egypt in 1832 before being dismantled.
“Technically, they don’t need the permission of the United Nations to declare statehood. It would give them official recognition within that organization, but they don’t need it to actually be a country. But it’s nice, which is why they are going after it,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “It is very valuable though, and it would give the government there more legitimacy. It’s not going to happen, obviously, given the statements by Obama, at least not right now. In many ways both sides are right, but there is no doubt that the Palestinian government is really trying to race this, trying to cut in line. They need to take the example of the founding of modern Israel as an example. Or the election of Obama himself. You don’t get anywhere by not putting in the work and two hundred years or so of war and conflict just isn’t enough.”
Zionist immigration into the region began in the late 19th century. Obama spent 3 years as a Senator before becoming President, a lifetime in politics.
“Nothing worth having is ever easy, that’s what they say and that is just as true here as it is anywhere else. Yes, you could look at as generations of Palestinians having suffered war and conflict and subjugation and becoming refugees but that’s only if you look at the big picture. The real question is what have you done for us lately, and that is the thing which plagues the Palestinian effort,” continued Hander. “That, ultimately, is what will kill the attempt. Perhaps in another hundred years, maybe it will take two hundred, the Palestinian people will have what it takes to become a country once again. Maybe at that time they will get recognition from the UN, or the Solar Alliance, or the league of aligned worlds or whatever body governs the planet at that time. Patience and hard work goes a long way.”
A spokesperson for the President denied the veto has anything to do, at all in anyway shape or form, with the upcoming Presidential election.
