PRIME MINISTERS MAY PAVE THE WAY FOR A GIRL TO LEAD THE MONARCHY

October 14 2011

London, U.K. –  While it may be unfamiliar for a woman to be in charge of a country, one nation and her descendents have engaged in the practice for centuries. Queen Elizabeth is only the latest in a long line of female rulers of Britain and her colonies, and if the Prime Ministers of those countries she won’t be the last.queen elizabeth

British Prime Minister David Cameron sent a letter to other leaders of the Commonwealth countries (which includes Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and 13 other countries) about a desire to change a centuries old law governing the royal line of succession. At issue is the 1701 Act of Settlement which states that a male heir to the throne will always take precedence over a female, no matter the age alignment.

Essentially, a younger brother would become King before the older sister could become Queen. While not an issue right now because the next two heirs are male, Cameron is hoping to change the rules for no apparent reason other than not dealing with the pressing financial and social issues at home, or because his wife is putting pressure on him.

"The successor to the throne is a man. The next successor to the throne is a man. I don't think Canadians want to open a debate on the monarchy or constitutional matters at this time,” said Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper last April, during the run-up to the Royal wedding. That sentiment is common throughout the Commonwealth yet Cameron has decided to press the issue at a heads of government meeting later this month.stephen harper

It’s not clear when or if the Queen will die, making it possible that her yet unborn great-grandchildren will actually take over for her sometime in the future.

“Legally, it is a tough thing to change. It requires changing the constitutions of 16 different nations and even getting them to consider such a thing is going to be tough. Some of these countries have had women in power, but everyone gets an equal vote and it’s going to tough to push countries like Ghana or Mozambique in that direction,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “It is possible, crazy perhaps, that each country could change the law by themselves and could end up recognizing different monarchs as their head of state. I know that Prince Harry, despite not being a girl, has expressed a desire to be King of Canada. That would be complicated though.”

Harry is third in line to the throne and is fully male.david cameron with wife

“I mean power sharing would be tough. There is only one Buckingham Palace after all. They would have to split up the realm, everyone would have to get new money, and the bureaucracy would just be a nightmare. That would not be a great idea,” continued Hander. “That said, they have a long time to work on this. I mean William is young and he may well have a male child first so it is not even relevant yet, especially considering the other issues pressing these nations, especially Britain, right now. I mean if Cameron decides to focus too much on this there may not even be a nation to rule that far into the future and that should really be his priority, no matter how much his wife is nagging him.”

The members will meet in Australia, which is run by a girl.
