TORONTO ZOO AT RISK OF REBELLION FOLLOWING PLANS TO TRANSFER ELEPHANTS

November 21 2011

Toronto, Canada – There has long been two schools of thought on keeping animals in zoos. One line has been that animals are not meant to be in cages and that doing so is detrimental to their health and to the health of the natural world as whole, in addition to just being cruel. The other line has been that animals are much more orangutan
stressed in the natural environment, subject to predators, and that keeping them in zoos allows people to learn more about them which could lead to better treatment. Rarely do either of those school of thought come together, unless it comes to the issue of performing animals.

That is exactly what he Toronto Zoo has found itself in the middle of after agreeing to transfer three elephants to a facility in California designed to care for animals which have spent their lives performing. That facility, the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has long butted heads with zoos and their oversight committees, something that has endangered the long term health of the Toronto facility which is now faced with losing its accreditation.

More than that, though, the possible loss of the three animals has not gone over well with zoo officials and residents, setting the stage for a possible rebellion both inside and outside the facility that could forever destroy the zoo and wreak havoc on the surrounding area. toronto zoo logo

Toka, Inringa and Thika are all beloved animals here. We realize that they are getting older and that eventually their time on the stage has to end, but shipping them off to some animal retirement home is not the right way to do it, it’s just not fair,” said a zoo worker. “I can tell you right now that this will lead to trouble. Nobody, not the staff, the visitors, or the animals themselves are happy with this decision and we will fight it.”

The decision to transfer the animals was made by city councillors without consulting the zoo or the animals themselves.

It’s not clear what the elephants at the middle of the controversy think about the decision, as they are elephants and incapable of communicating complex emotions with humans beings.cheetah

“If they, these lawmakers, think that this is something we are just going to step back and accept they are crazy. This isn’t just about these elephants, it is about the welfare of all the animals at the zoo and it has to stop before it gets started,” continued the worker. “We will rise up, we will stand and fight. We are all Toka, Inringa and Thika and we will stand with them.”

The Toronto facility is the largest zoo in Canada, home to over 16,000 animals, some of which are just fish and lizards.

“The people of Toronto will understand what kind of mistake these lawmakers have made if they go ahead with this plan. This aggression will not stand, we all feel this way,” continued the worker. “The streets will run red with blood and the animals will run free, free for the first time in their lives, and there will be no stopping them. They will pay for these actions.”

It’s believed likely that if the animals are released they will be shot. The fish will likely be left to suffocate.
