TURKEY SHAKES UP THE REGION WITH MAJOR QUAKE
October 23 2011
Ankara, Turkey – A massive earthquake has struck Turkey’s border with Iran, leaving as many as a 1000 dead in its wake. The city of Van was the most heavily hit with collapsed buildings and power lines across the city. Rescue teams are on site to aid with recovery and clean up.
“All of a sudden, a quake tore down the building in front of me. All the bystanders, we all ran to the building and rescued two injured people from the ruins,” said one local. “We heard cries and groaning from underneath the debris, we are waiting for the rescue teams to arrive.”
Experts estimate that the quake was 7.2 magnitude . Turkey is prone to earthquakes and are well equipped to deal with the aftermath, prompting them to reject offers of assistance from other nations well before anyone offered or apparently even considered offering. It’s believed unlikely that anyone will be making any serious effort to offer help after the pre-emptive rejection.
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was travelling to the region to witness the destruction first hand. He will not be actively involved in aiding the recovery effort as experts told him that his help was not needed and not wanted.
“Luckily, and this seems strange, there are a lot of earthquakes in Turkey and that
has given them a great infrastructure to deal with these kinds of things. Unless the quake is much worse than the initial estimates I would say they will be able to deal with things themselves, which is good, because they don’t have a whole lot of friends of late,” said Scrape TV Disaster analyst Walter Lim. “They have really alienated themselves from the West after years of trying to get in with them and that is going to make those countries less inclined to lend a hand now. Luckily they don’t really need anyone’s help because it’s pretty clear that they aren’t going to be getting any of it anytime soon. I mean if things are much, much worse than 1000 dead other countries may consider helping, but it would take a lot.”
Just yesterday, Turkey killed 49 Kurdish militants in the country in an ongoing effort to quell rebellious elements, particularly from religious minorities, something which has put them at odds with many European countries.
“We are looking at a few dozen buildings, some power lines, likely some water facilities but that is really it aside from the dead. As far as Turkish earthquakes go this was really a light one, a minor event in the grand scale so they will have little or no trouble getting back from it, luckily for them, by themselves,” continued Lim. “I mean it’s sad that that many people died and it’s not really their fault that their government has decided to alienate so many other countries, but luckily they probably won’t suffer as a result of that simply because there are so many quakes in that country. Luckily too for other countries they aren’t going to be put in a situation where they have to decide whether or not to help, that would be a little awkward to say the least.”
Update: Israel, of all countries, has offered aid. Turkey ignored the phone call.
