U.K. MAY WITHDRAW FROM EUROPE ENTIRELY AFTER REJECTING EU VOTE
December 9 2011
Brussels, Belgium – It seemed to be all done to the wire for Europe as heads of state from across the continent met in Brussels to vote on a package that many hope will stabilize the fragile economy in the region. For the most part the nations involved took that vote seriously and okayed the agreement formulated by the French and Germans, but not everyone was so passionate about the agreement.
In a dramatic gesture, U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron vetoed the bill, pulling his nation out of the agreement that every other member of the Union believed was the only solution to resolving the fiscal crisis.
That, of course, was not greeted with enthusiasm from the other members, particularly those who had worked so hard to nail down the specifics of the agreement. Cameron, though, remained steadfast and unfazed by the criticism levelled at him by his compatriots, further extracting his nation from Europe and setting the stage for what many believe could eventually be a move to somewhere in the mid-Atlantic region.
“I had to pursue very doggedly what was in Britain's interests, which is very difficult in a room where people are pressing you to sign up to things because they say it is in all our interests,” said Cameron.
Nicolas Sarkozy in particular appeared muffed by the rejection, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel made no public comment, likely because she knows what is going to be coming to British shores in the near future.
Cameron has largely been at odds with other EU leaders since taking office last year.
It’s believed that the rejection was in large part due to the restrictions put on spending by EU governments in the agreement, which would likely kill the ongoing purchase of thousands of pontoons and other flotation devices the Cameron government has been investing in over the last few months.
“The agreements is really restrictive, there is no doubt about that. It cedes a lot of control to a centralized government which is not something the British were ever likely to accept. I mean they have only loosely been members in the first place and giving up more control would have been very un-British,” said Scrape TV European analyst Gillian Weismann. “Of course it isn’t just philosophical or cultural, it’s also part of a much larger plan that really would have been inhibited by further integrating into the Union.”
One of the major sticking points in moving the islands has been Ireland, which is partially British and partially dependent on the EU for potato shipments.
“If Britain had agreed to this they simply would not have been able to continue purchasing flotation devices and earth diggers on the same scale and that would have severely restricted their ultimate goal. It could also be that they are much closer than we believe and that agreeing would have been largely pointless altogether,” continued Weismann. “It would be tough and silly to continue to submit to EU control when you are thousands of miles away. Besides with all the high winds and sharks Britain will have enough to worry about with having to deal with all those administrative headaches.”
The country is likely to move before the next election in the U.K.
