U.S. MOVING TROOPS INTO TROUBLED AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK

November 16 2011

Canberra, Australia – With troops out of Iraq and steadily drawing down in Afghanistan, the United States has dramatically reduced its military obligations around the world, moves that will undoubtedly save money but may also increase potential trouble in other areas. After all, the planet is not a safe place and as happens in unsafe places, when the police leave, trouble begins to stir.obama gillard

While the usual culprits are of course of major concern – Iran, North Korea, Syria – there are dangers in other parts of the globe and the United States has not totally relinquished its obligations to protect those areas, as evidenced by an agreement just signed in Australia.

Under the terms of the agreement, signed by President Obama and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, the United States will dedicate fresh resources to the country beginning with a small deployment of Marines in the New Year. While the initial agreement does set a cap on the number of soldiers in the country, it does allow for further deployments as needed should the situation in the country, particularly in the outback, start to worsen.

“Australia will welcome deployments of a company-size rotation of 200 to 250 Marines in the Northern Territory for around six months at a time,” said Gillard. “Over a number of years we intend to build on this relationship in a staged way to a full force of around 2,500 personnel that is a full Marine air-ground task force.”red kangaroo

The deployment will be the largest in Australia since the Second World War.
Obama acknowledged that the deployment was inspired by the growing influence of China in the region, but the marines will also deal with domestic issues across the country.

“While we resent the notion that foreign troops are required to placate our domestic concerns, we do welcome U.S. soldiers and the type of comfort they give. While Australian police and military will be doing the bulk of the enforcement, having a U.S. presence does negate some of the more aggressive tendencies,” said a spokesperson for the Department of Defence. “Just having them here helps to eliminate certain types of activities, which in turn will make enforcement by our forces that much easier.”

It’s not clear what type of domestic issues have become so potent that they would require an entire Marine detachment, but reporting from the bulk of Australia is sketchy at best. vegemite

“I’m sure this will cause some consternation in the United States, once again putting U.S. lives on the line in a foreign country, but that is just one of the many burdens the United States has to bear because of the profile they enjoy. It’s unfair, a little bit, but it is more than compensated for by the enormous wealth of the country,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “Luckily the situation in Australia isn’t nearly as bad as Afghanistan. While there will be some dangers such as Kangaroos and vegemite, that is still preferable to an IED or a bullet in the face, generally.”

U.S. forces will not be forced to eat vegemite while on duty, as per the agreement.
