YEMENI PRESIDENT SAYS HE DOESN’T REALLY WANT TO BE IN CHARGE ANYWAYS
October 9 2011
Sana’a, Yemen – When the uprisings in Africa began earlier this year there was a hope, perhaps a dream, perhaps a fantasy, that they could cascade across the region and bring real change. For a little while it seemed that was exactly what was going to happen, and then things stalled. Gaddafi remained resolute in Libya, Bahrain cracked down, and Syria turned on its people. In many ways, the hopes of the early parts of that revolution have turned around 180 degrees with the people of many nations now more repressed than ever.
However, hope does rise in some areas, most significantly in Yemen where anti-government protestors have continued to gain ground and now appear to be on the verge of pushing President Ali Abdullah Saleh from power. Saleh, though, sees it a little differently insisting that he will eventually step down from power, power that he never really wanted in the first place and will be glad to give away once the revolution reaches his door.
“The words 'few days' means days or weeks until the negotiating parties reach an agreement," deputy information minister Abdu al Janady told Al Jazeera. "The president had authorised his deputy to engage in negotiations with the opposition on the mechanism to set the GCC in effect....he will be calling for the elections and will not run for president again.”
Saleh has been President of Yemen since 1978, a role he has apparently never relished but one he felt he needed to hold onto with an iron fist for the people of the country.
“This will be a great change for the people of the country and for the President as well. This has been a long time in coming and he is very glad that it has finally come to this. He is getting older and her was concerned that this day would never come but now it is finally in sight and he is very happy about that,” said a government insider. “He is not going to just step down for anyone but when the right situation comes about he will be more than happy to step aside. He feels he has only been the caretaker of this position. It is not something he had lusted after or held onto for his own reasons. He only ever did it for the people of the country and when they are ready he will step aside.”
It’s believed that a June assassination attempt, in which he was injured by an RPG, made Saleh realize that the people of the country were finally ready to rule by themselves. That attack apparently left Saleh with burns over 40 percent of his body and a new outlook on life and the Presidency.
“This has been a great run for the President and he has been thrilled to be able to do this for so long for the people of the country. He is just as thrilled to be able to step aside and allow the people of the country to take charge just as they were meant to do, just as he always wanted,” continued the insider. “He just hopes that the people of the country realize all he did for them over these many years. He does not want platitudes or statues, but people thanking him every now and then on the street would be nice. That is all he has ever desired, appreciation for his many years of service.”
Saleh will likely indulge in years of surgical procedures following his retirement.
