YEMENI WARPLANE MAKES SUCCESSFUL STRIKE ON HOME BASE
October 5 2011
Sanaa, Yemen – A Yemeni warplane has struck an entrenched army position in the southern part of the country, killing at least thirty. Early details indicate that both the plane and the soldiers were on the same side, the government side, at the time of the strike.
Government officials acknowledged the strike and the death toll at the abandoned school. While details are still vague at this time, it’s believed that the warplanes had intended to strike a different school which housed rebel forces. There are only two schools in the region, none of which actually house any students.
There has been heavy fighting in the region as government forces fight to regain control from rebel fighters, many of whom are constantly switching sides making the fighting very difficult.
“Yes, our warplanes did indeed strike a position in the Abyan region. Unfortunately, a number of government soldiers were in the area at the time, but we are still pleased with the efficiency of the strike. We do admit, however, that our targeting and intelligence information needs some work,” said a Yemeni government insider. “Had this strike hit a rebel target we would all be celebrating because it was so well executed, something very rare for us. This part makes us happy, but we did not want to kill our own soldiers.”
Yemeni officials refused to comment publicly on the incident but others in the government did acknowledge that militants did arrive on scene later in the day and killed survivors. They also admitted that in another week those soldiers likely would have changed sides anyways.
The strike was conducted by the elite arm of the Yemeni air force which has only four planes, three pilots, and about a dozen mechanics. It’s believed a mechanic was flying the plane at the time of the strike.
“This is most certainly a sad day for some of us in Yemen. The government does join in mourning the dead and wounded. This may in fact create new rules that will prevent our soldiers from hiding out in schools, which is the best thing that may come from this incident,” continued our insider. “We hope in the future that any schools we bomb will not house soldiers loyal to the government. In the future, all school bombings should be isolated to just the militants.”
The militant group is made up primarily of the 119th Brigade which has rebelled against the government. Hiding in schools is a common training technique for Yemeni military forces.
“In most countries this type of thing would be a death blow for the government effort, but in Yemen it is really just another day. I mean these soldiers may have eventually turned to the other side, or may not have, so the pilot could really have been doing the government a service in the long term,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “Or not. One thing they have done though is shown the rebels and the government soldiers that they have no problem bombing schools and that alone will make a change in the way they do business. I’m sure most people won’t be hiding in schools going forward, for either side.”
The schools had been closed for years before the current conflict.
