CAPTAIN OF ILL-FATED ITALIAN CRUISE LINER JUST REALLY DIDN’T WANT TO DIE
January 18 2012
Giglio, Italy – Boat crashes happen all the time, rarely though do cruise liners topple on their sides and spill passengers into the water. That, above all else, is what has made the story of the Costa Concordia such a compelling one over the last few days. The ship, full of passengers on vacation, hit a rocky outcropping and began to sink immediately, killing at least 11 people and leaving 21 still missing.
Adding even more intrigue to the tale is the man at the centre, the captain of the ship Francesco Schettino who ran the ship aground then, betraying ancient naval tradition, abandoned ship with people still on board. Those actions have now landed Schettino in serious trouble, criminal charges, that will likely put him away for many years.
Schettino himself has proclaimed his innocence for the whole thing, compiling a litany of excuses for the reason the ship crashed and why he refused to stay on board, even after being ordered to by the Coast Guard. Now though a clear picture of Schettino’s actions is starting to appear, making it clear that he really just didn’t want to stay on the ship and risk dying along with all the other people he had killed.
“I didn't even have a lifejacket because I had given it to one of the passengers - I was trying to get them into the lifeboats in an orderly fashion. All of a sudden the boat listed between 60-70 degrees, I tripped and ended up in one of the lifeboats. That's
why I was in there. Once it was over the side the boat wouldn't lower down into the water because it was blocked by one underneath,” Schettino told investigators before being released into house arrest.
Schettino backed off his earlier claim that he hadn’t actually been on the boat at all but instead had been swimming when he was picked up by a rescue raft.
Officials for Carnival Cruises, which owns the ship, have confirmed beyond a doubt that Schettino was actually on the ship as the captain and not on vacation.
Schettino reportedly turned his ankle while falling into the raft, for which he is receiving medical attention.
“Frank really didn’t want to die. He saw all these other people dying around him and he realized that was not he wanted to have happen to him and so he had no choice
but to get off. If he hadn’t he would have ended up dead like everyone else. That is not much of a choice,” said an insider close to the case. “He just wanted to stay alive, he felt that was best for him and best for his employer. He just wants all of this to be over so that he can get back to work, hopefully on the Costa Concordia. He really loves that ship.”
Schettino has also backed off earlier claims that he believed the ship had been equipped with wheels.
It’s believed that the ship will be salvageable once it is put upright, the water is drained, and the cold stench of death is wiped away for good.
