CAPTAIN WHO RAN CRUISE SHIP AGROUND IN ITALY COULD’VE SWORN THE THING HAD WHEELS
January 14 2012
Giglio, Italy – At least three people have died and dozens more are missing after a cruise ship ran aground off the coast of Tuscany early on Saturday. The 1500-cabin Costa Concordia reportedly hit a rock spur in waters that had been declared safe.
Many of the passengers jumped overboard when the vessel began to list, swimming to the nearby shore. It’s not clear whether or not the ship was filled to capacity when it crashed.
Captain Franceso Schettino has been arrested pending an investigation but has already given an impromptu interview on the disaster, speaking to a local television station.
“As we were navigating at cruise speed, we hit a rocky spur. According to the nautical chart, there should have been sufficient water underneath us,” Schettino told Tgcom24 shortly before his arrest.
The captain has apparently also told police that he believed the ship had come equipped with wheels, something the owners of the boat had been promising for months. It’s not yet clear if the supposed wheels had been deployed as the vessel came closer to the coast.
Understandably, passengers and crew are shocked at both the disaster and that the promised land voyage appears to have been a lie all along.
“This is just a disaster. So many people are dying. It’s like the Titanic and our cruise is ruined. My clothes, my good cruise clothes are now gone. I even lost a shoe as I tried to swim ashore. Very sad and disappointing. I was very much looking forward to the land cruise, but not this,” said one passenger who has said he will be demanding a refund.
Thus far, the cruise line has made no public comment about whether or not full or partial refunds will be offered. Officially, Cost Cruises does not offer refunds if a passenger leaves the vessel before the end of the cruise, potentially putting people who jumped off the ship out of luck.
The disaster has been compared to the Titanic by many of the passengers who are understandably shocked and not thinking clearly. At most 71 people have died in the crash, 1514 died on the Titanic who incidentally happened 100 years ago this year.
A re-release of the hit James Cameron movie, in 3-D, will be in theatres in April.
“This is mess, no doubt about it. I’m sure there will be a lot of lawsuits and a few charges placed regardless of whose fault it is. It could be that the wheels were simply not deployed, which would be the crews fault, but if they were not installed, which is entirely possible, the owners will be on the hook, though I’m sure they will sacrifice their captain,” said Scrape TV Disaster analyst Walter Lim. “That’s the way they do, these big companies. The captain kept asking for the wheels and was going to go ashore whether they liked it or not. They should have just given him what he wanted, that would have saved lives but, as usual, money comes before safety, just like the Titanic.”
The Titanic also did not have wheels, though that would not have helped in her situation.
