CASTRO AND CHAVEZ FINALLY MAKE THE TOP TEN WORST DICTATOR LIST IN 2011
January 2 2012
Havana, Cuba – It’s been a mixed bag for dictators across the world this year. Through Africa, dictators fell, either pushed from power through civil uprisings or murdered like dogs in the street. In the Middle East, dictators have struggled and even in normally docile Iran, rumours have started to unsettle the long-held power balance. To top it off North Korea saw the death and ascension of their dictatorship, capping off what has certainly been a volatile year.
As a result of that instability Parade’s annual Worst Dictator of the Year awards were certainly tough to choose, leaving out some familiar names like Kim Jong-Il and Than Shwe, but in turn making room for some new additions, including two high profile names who have long been ignored for consideration.
With Raul Castro at number 7, and cancer-ridden Hugo Chavez sneaking in at number 9, the Socialist power duo are now amongst the world’s elite, breaking the glass ceiling that had previously left Africa and Asia with nearly all the dictators, and hopes that they will be able to rise even further in the years to come.
“President Chavez is thrilled to be selected amongst this prestigious group. He is glad to finally be recognized and glad to be one of only two from the western hemisphere represented on this list, alongside his good friend Raul Castro of course,” said a spokesperson for Chavez. “There was a period when we believed that this would never happen, but it finally has and we are looking forward to moving even further up the list in the coming years.”
Chavez is occasionally rumoured to be near death or completely cancer-free at various intervals so it’s not clear if he will be available to rise on the list.
Traditionally, deceased dictators are excluded from the list, though Kim Jong-il did sneak in with an asterisk.
“This list is really a treat every time it comes out, even if it has become a little pedestrian in recent years. I mean they get it right, but seeing the same names year after year is really dull. It’s great that they were able to add new names without excluding anyone who deserved to be on the list. It’s really been a crazy year in this field,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “However this could be as far as the go, unfortunately. Chavez’s health and the determination by the West to bring that cancer back, and of course Castro being as old as dirt, these things don’t necessarily give you much faith that they will have a long run on the list, never mind moving up.”
Isaias Afewerki, a regular on the list, made the number one spot in lieu of Kim for destroying the will of the people of Eritrea for more than 20 years.
“We are going to see more people slide in and out in 2012, assuming the world doesn’t end. I would imagine Bashar al-Assad will be gone at the very least and Kim Jong-Un , well he just has to be on the list running North Korea. We may see some other movement as well, but likely nothing like what we saw in 2011,” continued Hander. “This was really a remarkable run this year and I don’t think the planet will ever see the likes of it again, especially if the world does end this year, obviously.”
Stalwart Robert Mugabe, 87, ranked 10th on the list. Mugabe has already started campaigning for the upcoming election and appears to be invulnerable, making it likely he will make the list again in 2012.
