EU OFFICIALS FORGOT HUNGARY WAS MEMBER UNTIL THEY REQUESTED EXIT
January 15 2012
Budapest, Hungary – Someday in the future we may look back on the early days of the European Union as one of the great experiments in human history. Whether or not is passes its current trials, the ideals that drove the E.U. were really quite remarkable, pulling together nations that have spent a millennia shedding each other’s blood and bringing them together. Pass or fail, it was a good try.
At this stage, it looks like it will end up being a failure. Economic woes continue to plague the continent and now talk of nations leaving, willingly or otherwise, has become a serious threat to the long term viability of the whole enterprise.
The latest country to start making noise is one of the more unexpected ones, a relatively recent entry to the Union that was a sketchy choice to begin with. While Hungary is certainly much improved over its Communist era history, their admittance to the E.U. was not a lock, and now it appears they want out, something officials are likely to grant with most of them forgetting that the country was even a part of the union in the first place.
“This week the EU declared war on Hungary in a very harsh and open way,” said Csanad Szegedi, a member of the European Parliament. “Since we have joined the EU we have seen no advantages and this means that Hungary should go its own way. We believe that Hungary will be better off as a sovereign nation and this is where we must end up going.”
EU administrators made no official comment on the request, but many other nations were shocked by the request, believing that Hungary was let go from the Union long ago.
It is believed that if the nation does leave the Union that it will still be allowed to remain on the continent, should they so choose.
“It’s really a shame that this experiment is falling apart. I suppose it was inevitable, I mean this is Europe after all, and the fighting and aggression that has built up for so many years was inevitably going to manifest itself in other ways. Still, it’s a shame. It was one of the great social experiments in human history,” said Scrape TV European analyst Gillian Weismann. “There were problems and lots of mistakes. The eagerness to invite people was really an issue. It’s pretty clear at this stage that even allowing Greece into the Union, which was an issue at the time, was a mistake and it’s one that they have made over and over again and which helped exacerbate the issues.”
EU officials have made it clear that admitting Greece was a mistake, a pretty big one as it turns out.
“Hungary... I mean it’s pretty clear that they didn’t really want to be a part of the Union in the first place. They held onto their money, they, well, they didn’t really integrate all that well. It was a conditional participation and that kind of thing is challenging at the best of times,” continued Weisman. “It’s really strange that they are actually still in the EU at all, frankly, and I’m sure that many member states are as surprised as anyone else. Surely they will expedite their departure because, well, I mean why not really. It’s Hungary.”
Hungarian officials have warned that their departure will mean no more goulash at EU potlucks, which is unlikely to affect the decision.
