IRANIAN THREATS TO ATTACK ON AMERICAN SOIL NOT MAKING THINGS ANY BETTER
February 1 2012
Tehran, Iran – There are moments, brief moments certainly, when it has appeared that the tensions in and with Iran were going to break. Their decision to allow nuclear inspectors, as an example, was just one of those moments but there have been many more, none of them particularly long-lasting, resulting in increases in the temperature.
Most of that tension has been a result of actions by the Iranian government, not from the West or Israel, something Iran probably wouldn’t argue themselves. In fact, they may even take pride in their ability to upset other nations, doing with such aplomb as they do, but eventually those actions are going to necessitate a response.
Thus far the only response has been more and more sanctions against Iran, with the occasional piece of fiery rhetoric thrown in for good measure. None of that has really been all that effective in combating the regime over the long term and it in many ways may have only made the regime bolder, so bold in fact that they are now considering an option to attack the United States on their soil, a threat which is unlikely to do anything to help the stress levels in the region one bit.
“…shows that some Iranian officials — probably including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — have changed their calculus and are now more willing to conduct an attack in the United States in response to real or perceived U.S. actions that threaten the regime,” said Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr. “We are also concerned about Iranian plotting against U.S. or allied interests overseas.”
Iran has not officially made any threats against the United States but a plot to assassinate the Saudi Ambassador to the U.S. last year shows they are least willing to conduct exercises on U.S. soil.
It’s not clear if Iranian war vessels would be capable of sailing half way across the globe to U.S. shores, at least not without having to stop a bunch of times.
“I would imagine that this idea of Iran attacking the U.S. proper is more fear mongering, on both sides, than it is an actual possibility. The reality is that Iran doesn’t have a whole lot in terms of assets and what they do have is fairly limited and so they might have to resign themselves to attacking U.S. properties in the neighbourhood rather than, say, Miami,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “Keep in mind that the main airport in Iran only has one runway so it’s not like they are able to launch a huge sortie against the U.S. from where they are. The idea is pretty scary though.”
Iran has been positioning its vessels, especially the really scary ones, in the general direction of the U.S. which really doesn’t mean anything.
“It’s kind of scary to think that Iran would be willing to attack the United States and I would guess that is exactly what they are trying to accomplish, because they certainly aren’t going to accomplish the attack itself. Well, they could but it would be mostly bags of rocks and desperation that they assault the country with which would be the mildest act of war in history,” continued Martinez. “Hopefully they back down from this and just continue to antagonize Israel. That at least is a possibility, war with Israel, and threatening it makes them look a little less crazy. Just a little, mind you.”
Iran has also threatened to attack the moon in the past, which they have not done…yet.
