MEXICAN DRUG CARTELS WOULD RATHER NO ONE WINS PRESIDENTIAL RACE
February 6 2012
Mexico City, Mexico – There has never really been anything like what is happening in Mexico right now in the history of the world. A developing country, one with a good deal of wealth and potential for success, with entire sections totally consumed by criminal elements, lawless territory that had once been relatively safe, is something very foreign in the modern world.
That is Mexico though, a living, breathing version of the Old West, though this time with a lot more firepower and whole lot less romance. Mexico is a nation on the brink and there may be nothing and no one that can bring it back before things tip over and the country becomes completely consumed by its troubles.
Despite the desperate situation, people are trying to keep the peace and even, possibly, restore some sense of order to the increasingly chaotic country. That is the central issue of the upcoming Presidential elections in the country, a pitched battle between a popular Liberal and business-like Conservative that will likely decide the future of the country, a future that will no doubt be influenced by those causing the chaos, the cartels, who would really rather no one won the election but will go with the Liberal if they have to choose.
“Of course we have great interest in this election but we would rather it simply did not occur at all. We don’t feel that the government as any real say in our territory and we prefer it that way. We are concerned that certain leaders will try to influence our region and that is something we would prefer to avoid,” said one cartel spokesperson.
“Ideally we would not have a President at all, that would be the best situation, but we have worked well with PRI before and we feel that could continue if they get into power.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) is considered the front runner for the July 1 election.
The PRI has in the past worked with drug cartels to try and limit violence by being a lot more lax on distribution, something which has wide appeal in Mexico but is causing consternation north of the border.
“We are very concerned about the past, the way in which the PRI has dealt with the cartels, but we will adapt, we have no option. We are very pleased with the actions we have undertaken with the Calderon government over the last few years but that is ending one way or the other,” said a U.S. government insider. “We want to ensure that the level of violence that has been occurring is reduced because it is really awful. We also want the drugs off the street of course and getting everything we want is difficult sometimes, but especially in Mexico.”
It’s not clear if the PRI will support the rampant beheadings which have now become common in the country, as they have done in the past.
“We are willing to work with any government in power, so long as they understand our concerns and our needs. We cannot simply stop decapitating people or crucifying them on road ways. This is not a viable solution for us and it is not something we are willing to bend on for any government,” continued the cartel spokesperson. “These things are an essential component of our business model and without them we would simply cease to function, and that is not something we are willing to do for any government and so they will have to figure out a way to deal with it.”
Neither party has commented on their specific positions on decapitations or other such gruesome manners of doing business.
