VENEZUELAN OPPOSITION CANDIDATE UNLIKELY TO USE CANCER ATTACK AGAINST CHAVEZ
February 9 2012
Caracas, Venezuela – Despite what many people seem to believe about Venezuela and its leader, Hugo Chavez, the country is actually a democracy and Chavez is the elected leader. While few will argue that the political system in the country is healthy, full of robust candidates and strong political infrastructure, it is a democracy, an actual democracy, and Hugo Chavez is just a really popular politician.
True, Chavez has made an effort to corrupt certain aspects of that democracy by extending term limits but much of that is due to the fact that he can continue to win elections because people keep voting for him. In many ways, he may actually be the best thing for the country, owing to that weak infrastructure and a penchant for corruption, but people will try nonetheless to end his reign.
The newest challenger is Henrique Capriles, a young state governor who is expected to become the official candidate for the opposition Primero Justica party on Sunday in what may become a real contest for Chavez who has been in power since 1998. However, he does still hold a great deal of sway over the country and politics and despite recent health problems is still considered the front-runner for the Presidency. That latter concern, the health issues, is something Capriles is reportedly not willing to consider using, either as political rhetoric or in an effort to accelerate the disease and kill Chavez before voters ever get to the polling stations.
“I'm not an imperialist. Those are debates from 50 years ago when I wasn't even born. This is a debate between stagnation and progress,” Capriles told reporters in an only marginally engaging conversation, very unlike his likely foe.
Other candidates are vying for the party nomination and at least one, fellow Governor Pablo Perez, is apparently more than willing to accelerate Chavez’s cancer.
Chavez has pretty much dismissed the competitors because they frankly really don’t have a chance unless he is dead.
“We will use what tools we have to put Chavez out of power. There are limits because we do not want to replace this man with someone equally as ill, but we are very much willing to do what is needed in order to secure victory,” said an insider with the Capriles campaign. “However we do not want to play around cancer. Not only would such an act very much hurt our reputation, we would also be concerned about members of our organization catching it as well. That is not something we wish to have happen, we want to win this election cleanly.
It’s believed that in a clean fight the opposition will get maybe twenty percent of the vote.
“Hugo Chavez is as dominant a figure in his country as any country has. He is the country, really, holding reign over pretty much everything he sees. People love him even if outsiders seem to hate him, well at least Americans. He is fiery and charismatic and that goes a long way with the voting populace in any country,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “Frankly, I think cancer is probably the only way to combat that. In a race like this with such a popular candidate you really can’t play things clean, pick and choose what type of race you run. That is silly, you need to do what you need to do to win and if giving Chavez a fresh round of cancer will do that, then that’s what you have to do or you will lose. The choice is pretty plain actually.”
Chavez is reportedly feeling fine right now.
