CIA DEALT ‘DEVASTATING BLOW’ BY TALIBAN FORCES
December 31 2009
Kabul, Afghanistan – Eight years on it’s fair to say that the war in Afghanistan isn’t going exactly as planned. With over 100,000 foreign soldiers already in the country or on the way, the battle between western entities and the Taliban is showing no signs
of abating. As forces continue to clash, trading victories and failures back and forth as they go, there seems to be little hope that the conflict will end anytime soon, at least not in a way that will satisfy either side.
It is in those small conflicts thought that wars are often won and lost. The D-Day invasion, Guadalcanal, and Stalingrad are all examples of small battles that resulted in a tidal shift in their respective conflicts. While no such meaningful battles have occurred or are likely to occur in the Afghan war, and while the stakes in that conflict are not nearly as dire, the nature of war remains the same throughout. Now though one of the most significant conflicts of the long war appears to have occurred with Taliban forces dealing a ‘devastating blow’ to U.S. forces by killing seven CIA agents. While the smoke is still clearing from the attack, many observers are predicting that the attack could finally turn the tide of the battle towards the Taliban.
“I can confirm that seven agents of the Central Intelligence Agency were killed in an attack Wednesday. Another six agents were also injured in the attack. While this represents one of the largest single losses of life the United States has endured during this conflict it in no way affects or goals or our dedication to the battle,” said a CIA spokesperson. “Our resolve is never ending, our will made of steel. This assault will not hinder our efforts in Afghanistan but will instead strengthen our determination and give us fresh energy in the long days and nights that lay ahead of us. These deaths will not have occurred in vain.”
Previous to the attack, only 90 agents had ever been killed in the line of duty, a number that underlines the severity of the assault. Taliban officials made no comment on the deaths but are reportedly happy.
“This really could be a turning point in this conflict. Previously attacks by the Taliban resulted in the deaths of soldiers and journalists but this successful assault on such specialized personnel could undermine the focus and resolve of the enemy. For the first time The Taliban has shown what they can do, the power that they can bring, and I expect this is just the beginning for them,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “There is no doubt that the surge is working for them. By putting more troops into the region they have been able to move into areas occupied by U.S. forces and push them out. This attack shows how deeply they can penetrate and I expect that this is just the first in many assaults deep into American territory.”
The United States has started on the initial stages of their own surge which is expected to take many months to deploy.
“This is one of just many small victories by the Taliban in recent months and speaks well to their continued efforts in the region. A few more attacks like this and it’s very likely that at the very least the United States will pull back to their original borders,” continued Martinez. “It appears that they have turned the tide and pushed back at the Americans in a decisive and powerful way that they frankly may not be able to respond to. At this point their surge is a necessity if they want to hold onto what they have.”
Reports of demoralized soldiers have been rampant in the hours since the attack.
