CHINESE COAL MINE DISASTER ONLY KILLS 87
November 22 2009
Beijing, China – China’s rise to power in the modern world is something that many could have predicted hundreds of years ago. A nation of empires, China has long been the dominant force throughout her area, despite intermittent surges from nations
such as Japan and Mongolia. The great dynasties of the past, the great military leaders, the great economies have all worked together to push modern-day China to the cusp of being the biggest and most powerful nation on the planet. Though the United States will hold onto that crown for a few more years, the surging power of China all but ensures that very shortly she will be on top.
Part of that success has been due to the massive workforce the country enjoys. With the highest population on the planet, China has been able to exploit that workforce to its advantage, getting their foot in on virtually every type of business. Of course, China has also been working to limit the growth of

that population, realizing that eventually the population will outstrip the available jobs. The most famous of those efforts has been licences limiting the number of children but other, less famous procedures have also been at work. The latest, the deliberate destruction of mines, hit an obstacle on Saturday as 420 miners escaped a massive blast leaving only a little over 100 people dead or missing.
“The blast occurred in a mine in the north of the country. 528 people were working in the mind at the time of its collapse and the majority of them escaped without serious injury. Rescue teams are currently searching through the rubble to determine how many survivors may still be amongst
the rubble but we can confirm that at least 87 have died,” said spokesperson Zhang Jinguang for the Heilongjiang Longmei Mining Holding Group. “We are watching the situation very closely as there is still a significant possibility that further collapse could endanger or kill the rescue workers. We are very disappointed by the situation and we are will work hard over the coming days and weeks to determine what exactly did go wrong and what we can do to solve it for the future.”
240 rescuers are currently in the mine with an additional 300 aiding in the effort. So far there has been little sign of movement amongst the collapsed rocks.
“Mine related deaths were over 3000 last year which was a record but this year has seen a steady decline in the number of deaths. This has seriously hurt the bottom line of many of the mining companies which really benefit from the bursaries they receive. There are quotas like any business and they really need to hit that minimum in order to stay fluid,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “Despite the fact that China is a Communist nation there are a great deal of dollars floating around, especially in terms of what is paid out to top executives. If they don’t hit their numbers, they don’t get paid. It’s as simple as that.”
Even at the maximum, 108 dead would represent one of the highest totals thus far into the year, a far cry from the highs of previous years.
“Normally one would look at the loss of trained and experienced personnel as a serious burden to the long term viability of the company but the reality is experience and training are exactly what they don’t want. Training and experience means that incidents like this don’t happen which hurts the bottom line and, ultimately, the country as a whole,” continued Green. “In order for China to truly be a major player in the global economy they will have to strike a balance between costs and revenue and if they cannot control the size of their population they will have serious issues doing that.”
Mining officials believed that harsh new restrictions have made it more difficult to achieve massive mine disasters.
