HUNGRY RUSSIANS STILL TRYING TO NORMALIZE CANNIBALISM
November 14 2009
Samara, Russia – Though Russia has long stood as one of the great nations of the world they have historically struggled with keeping their large and diverse population on a more or less even keel. Perhaps because of the massive expanse of the country

or perhaps because of the way the country has undergone many abrupt changes, rule of law and basic social mores have frequently been a struggle for the nation. That of course was thought to have been solved with the introduction of Communism, which was seen as a cure all to the diversity issues plaguing the nation, but ended up only causing more.
The country has, of course, come a long way since the end of Communism, something memorialized earlier this week with the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Now one of the world’s leading economies and its former Soviet subjects also beginning to thrive, Russia has moved into the modern world in many ways, though like many emerging nations still has her struggles. In the case of Russia it is an incident in the southern part of the country which has brought such discrepancies to light, and brought into question once again the validity of cannibalism in a modern world.
“I have sentenced young Mr. Gavrilov to 14 years and three months. Under the strict interpretation of the law, he should have had 15 years but I chose to make an exception in this particular case. Part of that decision was the fact that he had already spent time in prison for a robbery charge, and part of it was because he was simply very hungry,” said Judge Leonid Petrov. “Russia is a complex nation and we must bring into account many factors when deciding on punishment for certain crimes. In this case Sergey had spent all his money on Vodka and gambling machines and therefore had no money with which to buy food. This is a very Russian type of thing to happen. He saw murdering his mother and eating her legs as the only option o fill an empty stomach, something which many Russians of a certain age can certainly understand. I stood on the breadlines, I know hunger and I have sympathy for anyone in that situation.”
The victim in the case, 55-year old Lyubov Gavrilov, was hit over the head with a brick and then strangled with an electrical cord. Two days after her murder, Sergey returned home after spending money that he stole from her on alcohol, and began to slice her up. He apparently found the meat largely unappetizing.
“Cannibalism is one of those crimes that in the majority of the world has a serious stomach turning element but in Russia it has been quite common. Throughout the war and well into the modern era of Communist rule cannibalism occurred regularly for good or for ill and that really hasn’t left in recent years,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “There’s a good likelihood that his mother herself was fond of eating people and simply passed it down to him. The question here isn’t the practice if individuals but how it’s punished.”
Psychiatric tests found Garilov normal, though very hungry.
“This is case that has reached a wider kind of attention than would normally have happened and because of that might be a little embarrassing to the Russian government. Generally speaking, they are very lenient on these kinds of cases as long as the rest of the world doesn’t find out. There has long been speculation that the Iron Curtain was in fact created in order to protect such behaviour from the rest of the planet,” continued Hattangady. “Either way the Russian government has to realize that such behaviour should be kept to minimum. The best way to do that would be to introduce something along the lines of food stamps so that even if you do get wasted, you won’t stumble home and start eating your relatives.”
Previous attempts to cut down on cannibalism have met with a desperate gnashing of the teeth.
