IRAN ADMITS A COUPLE OF PRISONERS WERE BEAT TO DEATH
December 21 2009
Tehran, Iran – When the world watched the explosion of protests throughout Iran last June many had hope that a genuine democratic movement was sweeping through the country. The images of young men and women protesting the election results
made international news as they watched a country long known as a bastion of
government oppression step forward and take things into their own hands. While the results of the election stayed the same the fabric of the country may never go back to the way it was, forcing the President and the Mullahs to start counting their days.
Whatever the long term effects of those riots might end up having on the state and the future of Iran, the protests themselves are still palpable for many in the country.
Hundreds were arrested in the aftermath of the uproar, dozens of businesses were damaged, and perhaps most importantly the international view of the country was forever altered. Now Iranian officials admit that at least three protestors in the riots were beaten to death while in police custody, and have charged 12 employees in the killings. While hundreds more were taken into custody and dozens have still not been heard from, Iranian officials would not comment on their whereabouts or possible fates.
“More than 150 people were taken to that particular facility following the protests but these were the only three to die there. The coroner rejected that these people died of meningitis and confirmed there were bruises on their bodies from beatings and that the cause of death was a series of beatings,” said a government insider. “Normally the government would not have said anything about this but one of the victims was a young man from a well connected Iranian family. His death provoked outrage in ruling circles and so obviously they had to do something about it. There’s also the possibility that by acknowledging these deaths they are pushing away interest in other actions as a result of the protests.”
The government also acknowledged that 200 people are still imprisoned as a result of the protests and five are currently awaiting execution.
“This was a very strange and difficult thing for the Iranian government and the ruling class to deal with. They had never before been faced with a situation like this and they dealt with it, well they dealt with it in a totally unexpected way for the most part. They didn’t crack down immediately and they allowed the protests to continue. This too is unusual for them,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “Acknowledging that they killed even a handful of people is really a step forward for the country. Normally these kinds of things would have just gone ignored but perhaps this is showing that the country is truly changing and opening up to the rest of the world.”
It’s not clear how many others may in fact be dead but it’s unlikely that the government will make any further statement.
“It’s a hard thing for an oppressive regime like this to truly change and come out and admit these types of things. I mean the goal should be to just stop the killing, that would be the ideal, but at least they are admitting it happened. That’s the first step in their recovery,” continued Gershwin. “Even major countries like China can’t do the same thing. They still insist that the protests at Tiananmen Square were more of a love-in rather than a brutal crackdown. Iran could truly be changing for the better.”
According to insiders at least three dozen people were beaten to death as they cleaned the streets after the protests and another thirty were killed after trying to prepare their funerals.
