ISRAEL AT A LOSS AS EXECUTIONS FAIL TO DERAIL PEACE IN WEST BANK

January 1 2010

Nablus, West Bank – It is possible that there will never be peace between Israel and the Palestinian people.  The conflict between those two peoples has been raging for well over a century now, dating from the time when Jewish immigrants first started to ramallah attack
move back to their former homeland. Wars, incursions, deposition of a nation, and out-and-out hatred have all boiled together in that time to make one of the most toxic mixes in human history, a mixture that is commonly spilling over, and may never fully stabilize.

Things have been relatively peaceful for the last year or so though. A small battle in late December and early January of 2008 aside, the peace between the two parties has been largely serene with no major outbreaks of violence. Not that they haven’t been trying though. The most recent effort to stir up the hornet’s nest comes courtesy of the Israeli’s following the death of an Israeli motorist. Even that, an incursion into Nablus and the execution of three suspected militants, has done little to west bank patrol
rile up the Palestinians who are normally much more prone to reacting to such incidents. The lack of response has been frustrating extremists on both sides and leaving many to wonder if perhaps peace has after all been achieved without either side really trying.

“Odds are things will never be cosy between the two peoples like say the United States and the United Kingdom. Those two countries were bitter enemies for many years but they eventually put aside those differences and now get along famously, but such a thing is not like to happen here,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “There are many reasons why that is the case but that does not mean that they can simply end hostilities. You don’t necessarily have to be friends with your neighbours, but you also don’t have to cut down their bushes either. Perhaps the best that can be accomplished is a kind of agreement to not fight.”ramallah al aqsa matyrs brigade

Such an action seems to have taken place amongst the people of the region but the powers that be are not taking that lying down.

“Ultimately it doesn’t befit any of the power players in the region to see fighting just simply end. These cycles of violence and calm are simply far too valuable to too many people in the region to let them simply fade away and I think if incidents like this aren’t enough to cause an uproar then they will have to step it up to the next level,” continued Gershwin. “A major bombing, perhaps one that kills a number of children would likely do it. It’s been many years since a serious intifada has taken place and without some like Arafat in charge such a popular movement will be difficult to accomplish unless something really extreme happens. I’m sure if anyone can find a way to rile up the other side it’s the people in this region.”west bank police

Other possibilities include a fresh invasion by Israel or increased attacks from Hezbollah in Lebanon which frequently results in action against Palestinians.

“Whether it’s the Palestinians or the Israelis one side has to step up and make a difference. With tensions increasing in Iran, the stabilization and likely resurgence of Iraq, and the rising power of Yemeni terrorism there are many threats to the popularity of that particular conflict which will harm both sides in the long run,” continued Gershwin. “Foreign investment will dry up and both sides will be left to deal with things on their own, something neither of them can afford.”

Both sides have reportedly been planning major offences for 2010, pending the current state of affairs in Iran.
