PAKISTANI BOMBING STARTS NEW YEAR OFF WITH A BANG

January 1 2010

Peshawar, Pakistan – New Year revellers were surprised during a celebratory volleyball game in northwest Pakistan when a suicide bomber drove on the field,
detonating an explosive, killing 32 and wounding 70 early on the first day of 2010. paqkistan bombing While details are still rolling in as to the motivation by the bombing early indications are that the bomber may have been accidently detonated the van while trying to deliver a number of fireworks to celebrate the New Year.

Already though various reports are crediting the attack to ongoing troubles in the largely lawless areas of Pakistan, specifically related to an effort by residents to expel militants, details of the attack uncovered exclusively by Scrape TV News indicates that the attack was more than likely a simple accident. The city in which the attack occurred, Lakki Marwat, is near South Waziristan, where the Pakistani military has been waging an ongoing war against the Pakistani Taliban. That city is also home to one of the largest fireworks production facilities in the country, something that has been an ongoing point of controversy for the region as a result of numerous similar incidents.

“The initial reaction is that this attack was linked to the ongoing problems in the region which has killed more than 500 people in the last two months but that seems volleyball
to just be knee jerk reaction. So far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack and, according to survivors, the driver of the vehicle seemed out of control which is evidenced from his apparent wandering onto a field in the middle of a volleyball game. All those factors combined seem to indicate that this was nothing more than a tragic accident,” said Scrape TV Central Asian Field Reporter Dov Kenning. “I’ve been to the site and it’s quite devastated which indicates that the van had a significant number of fireworks on board which likely would have made for a great display and a great start to the New Year. It’s a shame things have turned out this way.”

Early analysis of the site indicates that the blast was likely sparked by an errant cigarette or a spark as result of two pieces of metal scraping together which in turn caused a chain reaction.pakistan bombing

“What we really need to diagnose is why the driver was on the Volleyball field in the first place. According to eyewitnesses the driver suddenly turned onto the field while driving down the street. That indicates that he could have realized that something had gone wrong and tried to turn the vehicle into what he might have believed was an empty field but tragically that turned out to not be the case,” continued Kenning. “What’s surprising about all of this is the number of people present at a Volleyball match. The sport has been growing in popularity throughout the region in recent years, likely due to American presence in Afghanistan. I’d imagine that we be seeing a crackdown on games in the near future.”volleyball dig

Officially Pakistan prohibits gatherings larger than fifty people for any even other than cricket matches, a rule which is rarely followed in the lawless regions of the country.

“I’d have to see the pictures and it would be best to visit the site but judging from people have said and the number of people killed I’d guess that there were quite a lot of fireworks packed into that van,” said Fireworks expert Dylan Dale. “I mean if it was a big van you could put quite a lot of explosives inside which would cause a major explosion if it was ignited which could cause these kinds of deaths. I’d suggest that they be a little more careful in the future to prevent these kinds of incidents from happening again.”

Outside that incident New Year celebrations were largely enjoyed across the country.
