RECORD SETTING MASSACRE BRINGS JUBILATION TO THE PHILIPPINES
November 25 2009
Manila, the Philippines – There is kind of youthful exuberance in the Philippines today as details of the worst political massacre in the country’s history come to light. With the uncovering of a mass grave containing the bodies of 22 people the death toll

in the killings has reached 46, significantly outstretching previous massacres. As word of the killings has spread across the country police and government officials have been working overtime to quell the increasingly outrageous celebrations that are starting to grip the country.
The bodies were found in the Maguindanao province in the south of the country where much of the celebration has been located. People pouring into the streets carrying banners have started to overwhelm local officials prompting President Gloria Arroyo to declare a state of emergency in the province and a neighbouring territory in order to deal with the

celebrations. According to reports the government is anticipating having to employ such measures countrywide as the excitement begins to spread across the country of over 90 million people.
“It’s euphoria like nothing I have seen before. People are pouring into the streets even with police and military President. They are raucous and yelling at the top of their lungs. At first it appeared that it was simply a few drunken louts who were making all the noise but as more and more people started to join in the celebrations it was clear that this was something different. There’s this jubilant mood that really can’t be articulated in words, which makes this really difficult to write but it is palpable,” said Scrape TV South Asian Field
correspondent Arturo Lam. “Rarely is country gripped in this way, all taken by the same event and spontaneously erupting into celebration. In my long years corresponding for the news I have never seen anything quite like this all it took was a handful of bodies in a shallow grave. I can’t imagine what it would have been like when the tsunami hit, it must have been magical.”
During that tsunami in 2004 approximately 300,000 people died, the majority of which were in nearby Indonesia, a country not well known for public displays of celebration.
“Even the police and military are joining in the celebrations, waving batons and screaming at the top of their lungs. It’s such a fantastic experience to be a part of something that likely will be remembered for years to come. Parents will tell their children where they were when the great massacre celebration of 2009 took place,” continued Lam. “The truly great thing about this is that the Philippines is able to just let go and party. Most other places would declare a state of mourning and put
pictures of crying family members on television but not here. You can see the excitement on people’s faces as they throw bricks and bottles, and parade down the street with brightly coloured signs. This is truly a unique situation in a truly unique country.”
Officials have been hesitant to show the celebrations on TV, well aware that much of the world would have a negative reaction to such jubilation but images continue to leak out.
“There is legitimate concern that these killings could upset the political order in the south and perhaps throughout the country but for right now the focus is on the celebration. There is plenty of time to deal with the hard cold reality that these killings
will bring but for now people are correctly focussing on the good times,” said Scrape TV Asian analyst Wu Yao-nu. “The Philippines have had many hard times in their past and they have learned to laugh at those things which is good for the psyche of the people. This is just another one of those incidents that the people have to laugh at in order to stay sane.”
The government is reportedly mulling a weeklong celebration of the massacre that may occur every year.
