RUSSIA CONSIDERS DOING AWAY WITH TIME

December 29 2009

Moscow, Russia – Since our move from proto-humans just trying to survive to self-aware beings capable of organizing complex societies and expressions of our inner souls, the concept of time has both haunted and compelled us. Our relationship with ancient sundial
time is a complex one; when at work we want it to hurry up, when spending time with a loved one we want it to slow; when we are young we can’t wait to grow up, when our knees begin to ache we wonder where all that time went. For all of us too the clock is ticking, something that has helped define our very existence.

Science has also studied time in great detail, from simple experiments such as watching a pot boil to more complex concepts such as general relativity, the study of time has fascinated human beings in virtually every facet of our existence. For some though the more deleterious effects of time are a little too much to bear and with no fountain of youth in sight, some are pursuing drastic action to reduce how they deal with the concept. Leading the way is Russia, a nation that has often done things its own way, and which is now considering doing away with the concept of time entirely.the kremlin

"It's extremely inconvenient getting anything done through Moscow. For any activity, we often have to wait a day, wasting a whole 24 hours. My plant is 7 hours ahead of Moscow but we depend heavily on the offices there in order to do business meaning things take a very long time to get done and reduce any kind of competitive edge we might have,” said Vadim Vodyanitsky who runs a fish processing plant in the Far East of the country.  “I am in favour of doing away with the time zones as it would allow us to conduct business in a much more efficient manner and keep up with industries not just in Russia but throughout the world.”pocket watch

Russia currently has eleven time zones, something that has often been a source of pride for people across the country. President Dmitri Medvedev recently suggested that the country should consider scaling back the number of time zones but is now apparently considering a plan to do away with them entirely.

“By eliminating time zones they will avoid issues like the one this fish plant suffers. It is very difficult to conduct business when some people on one side of the country are just waking and others are going to bed which has put the country at a significant disadvantage when it comes to competing with other countries that don’t have such issues,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “Reducing the time zones was a great idea but this new proposal is just brilliant if it can be executed. By eliminating time entirely they will be awake for every market open, be able to produce constantly and put the country in an enviable position, from a business standpoint anyway.”

Sleep issues are likely to be the biggest concern as residents adapt to lack of measured time and regular schedules but Russian officials are working on ways to eliminate that requirement.buster keaton

“I really can’t see anything but positives in doing this. Aside from the business advantages they will essentially have done away with one of the most burdensome aspects of human society. They will have done away with the pressures of time and getting things done, as well as all concepts of mortality,” continued Green. “Making it work is the real issue though. It’s like flying cars. You can dream them up and want them all you want but that doesn’t make it so. Making it happen will be the real challenge.”

Some cities throughout the country have already begun a voluntarily clock collection in anticipation of the implementation of the plan.
