700 DEAD, 2 MILLION COMPLAINING AFTER CHILEAN QUAKE

February 28 2010

Concepcion, Chile – Flattened homes, collapsed bridges, lives destroyed. That is the harsh reality here in Chile where residents are just starting to come to terms with the massive earthquake that struck their country. Like any natural disaster, the quake earthquake
came suddenly, in the middle of the night, shaking their world and destroying everything they had taken for granted. The people of Chile are tough though, they are as used to earthquakes as a people can get, and so they get up, dust themselves off, and move on.

Unlike the quake that hit Haiti in January, this rattler, though much more powerful, has caused relatively little damage. While the city of Concepcion, the second largest in the country, was the hardest hit by the quake the damage in the city has been minor compared to the devastation laid upon Port-au-Prince. Due in part to preparedness, wealth, infrastructure, buildings designed to stay upright, and just sheer luck, the nation was spared the horror visited upon their small neighbour to the north. That however hasn’t changed the attitudes of the kobe earthquake
people in the country who have already begun complaining about the rubble in the streets and delays in public transit that has been caused by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded.

“We planned on going to the cinema today. I planned on taking my family to see ‘Avatar’ but now we will not be able to do that. We do not own a car so we must use the bus, but it is not coming by our street today because of the quake. I have also heard that the theatre has no power. My children are very disappointed,” said Marie Dias of Concepcion. “We wanted to see the film ahead of the Academy Awards so that we would have something to talk about. It seems everyone in the world has already seen the movie and we just didn’t want to be left out. Now I don’t think that is going to happen with the Oscars next week. I just don’t see how we are going to get there to see it before then.”avatar movie poster

Similar stories have been cropping up throughout the city with many people missing hair appointments and weekly dinner schedules being upset due to supermarket closures.

“The people here are durable and always have been. They are used to quakes and so when something big like this comes along, they are able to just shrug it off, normally. Unfortunately this quake was so massive that it has caused a great deal of inconvenience for many people and they are not happy about it,” said Scrape TV South American Field correspondent Javier Salazar. “The tension is palpable and it is certainly understandable. The streets are a mess with bricks and glass everywhere, something very abnormal for this city. There are a few bodies being pulled out of the rubble and that is irritating, but this is after all South America where dead bodies are common. It’s really the inconvenience that is really bothering people.”

Haiti has been similarly inconvenienced by their quake, which has killed over 200,000 people. Much of the issues in that country have been a result of the rotting corpses still buried under rubble.

“Haiti and Chile are very different countries for a number of reasons, but that doesn’t avatar game
mean the problems caused by such natural disasters aren’t shared by the two countries. Luckily for the people of Haiti they don’t have to worry about missing out on screenings of ‘Avatar’ because they have no idea what the movie is in the first place. For Chile, it is knowing what they have lost that hurts so much,” continued Salazar. “The people here will recover, but it will take awhile before their lives are back to normal. One day they will get back to the things used to be, but for now they just have to deal with it as they always have.”

Fox has dispatched personnel to the region in an effort to get theatres back up and running and organize shuttles for screenings. James Cameron will be supervising personally.
