CHINA CLOSE TO FINALLY KILLING REMAINING WILD TIGERS

January 21 2010

Beijing, China – Thousands of years ago as our ancient ancestors first began to form societies and learn the skills that would eventually lead to humanity becoming the most successful species in the history of Earth, Tigers watched our every move. Fromtiger
Africa to Asia to Europe, the giant cats have long been a nemesis of mankind, a reality which has helped share some of our deepest collective nightmares but also helped to inspire the spark that makes human beings so unique.

Defence against predators was undoubtedly one of the defining characteristics of early human, something that would force our ancestors to congregate in large groups and develop new and more fearsome tools to defend ourselves. Amongst the many predators that stalked those early humans it is like Tigers that evoked the most fear. Large, loud, and ferocious, Tigers have lost none of their fear-inducing abilities even as our species evolved far past the point of ever needing to be afraid of them. Now a new report from China indicates that the country is down to its last few wild tigers and that in less than thirty years the country will finally be free of our old nemesis. Though populations of the animals still exist throughout the world, the elimination of the species in China will undoubtedly be a huge step towards global eradication.tigher roaring

“If there are no urgent measures taken, there is a high risk that the wild tiger will go extinct. Globally, WWF estimates that if poaching and other threats continue, there are around 30 years left until tigers go extinct,” said Zhu Chunquan of WWF China. “Loss and degradation of the tigers' habitat in China and poaching of the animals as well as their prey - or source of food - were behind the rapid disappearance of the animal. Around 20 Siberian tigers remain in China's north-east, 20 Bengal tigers in Tibet, and 10 Indochinese tigers in the southwest of the nation. As for the South China tiger, after the late 1970s, there has been no concrete evidence to show that there are any left.”

It is estimated that no more than 50 tigers remain in the wild in China, though about 3200 exist throughout the world. tiger yawning

“It’s quite a remarkable thing to have done. Obviously early man extinguished animals the mammoths and the cousins of tigers, Sabre-tooth cats, but for the most part those animals existed in very isolated environments. Even recent extinctions like the Dodo are nothing like Tigers because they had such a small population in a distinct area. Tigers range across three continents, spanning multiple countries and huge populations so their elimination is something to behold,” said Scrape TV Zoology analyst Cambridge Walker. “The biggest cats were eliminated in Europe centuries ago but because of the lack of industrialization throughout other regions, tigers have simply moved in many other countries. Now though it appears that we are getting down to the wire and that very shortly the only place you will be able to see these animals is in a zoo.”

Zoo’s traditionally prevent human-animal interaction meaning that our domination of the tigers will finally be complete.tiger swimming

“The Tiger was likely essential to our evolution but that is no longer that case. We have evolved far beyond the need to be hunted and stalked by these giant carnivores and our priority should be making people safe. Tigers had their chance and they lost. We evolved, they stayed the same,” continued Walker. “There are still a handful of species, like bears, lions, and sharks, that we will still have to conquer but this is a step in the right direction and speaks well to the future of our species. Go Humans!”

Once isolated in zoos it’s believed that remaining tigers will be easy targets.
