ETHIOPIAN AIRPLANE CRASH LIKELY A RESULT OF THE PLANE BEING ETHIOPIAN
January 27 2010
Beirut, Lebanon – The tale of Icarus, though a parable, has always spoken deeply to all human beings. The dream of flight is something mankind has likely had since our earliest days on consciousness, seeing birds taking to the skies, evading predators

and enjoying what seems to be unlimited freedom. For most of our existence though human beings have been tethered to the ground with only the fantasy of soaring high above the Earth and stories such as those of Icarus.
By the beginning of the 20th century those dreams started to become a reality. The dreams of hundreds of generations were suddenly coming into a reality. Throughout that century flight went from massive dirigibles, to awkward multi-winged aircrafts, to lethal weapons of war, to faster than sound vessels, to air-trains, and eventually put us in touch with the stars. Just over one hundred years since those days at Kitty Hawk, air travel has become standard with thousands of flights occurring everyday and the dreams of ancestors now as routine as going to the corner store for milk. At least that’s the case for most people, not so much the passengers and crew of Ethiopian Flight ET409 which crashed into the Mediterranean off the coast of Lebanon, killing 90 people who likely realized as they plummeted like Icarus that their first mistake was being on an Ethiopian airplane.
“The control tower asked him to go in a certain direction, but the pilot was not responsive, then communication was cut off and the plane disappeared off the radar. We don't know why he did that or what happened,” said Lebanese transport minister Ghazi Aridi. “So far 25 bodies have been recovered and, according to the first report of our team there, there are six Ethiopian bodies among them, and eight Lebanese. But it has to be confirmed. They need to pinpoint the location of the wreckage and then launch a dive there to find data recorders.”
The plane last underwent a maintenance check December 25 by, it is believed, Ethiopian technicians.
“I mean as far as African airlines go Ethiopia has one of the better ones but its still
Ethiopia. For most people the real shock isn’t that this plane crashed, it’s that the
flight existed at all or that it was able to travel more than a few feet. I mean this plane was over the water which means it had to get significant altitude. You have to wonder if maybe they simply ran out of fuel, it’s a couple hundred kilometres from Addis Ababa to the location where it landed so that could have been at their upper limit,” said Scrape TV Airline analyst Jeffry Johnson. “One could be forgiven if the fuel gauges simply didn’t work, or perhaps one or more of the engines. Really in many countries you take your life into your hands when getting onto a local aircraft so it really was their fault in many ways.”
It’s believed that the plane was constructed with metal and bolts, much like those in other countries.
“Look, planes are going to crash on occasion. We are really defying the laws of nature by putting this massive tin can filled with hundreds of pounds of people and cargo and flying it through the skies. Every now and then one is going to fall but the odds are with you in many countries, not so much in Ethiopia,” continued Johnson. “This isn’t an indictment of the Ethiopian people, well maybe it is but it’s true. They go into famine like every six weeks or something so you have to kind of wonder about their dedication to checking thing like fuel gauges. Maybe the pilots just blacked out from hunger.”
It isn’t yet clear whether or not a meal was served on the flight.
