ETHNIC VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA LEAVES HUNDREDS OF NIGERIANS DEAD

March 9 2010

Jos, Nigeria – Anthropologists believe that all modern human beings descended from common ancestry. Starting in Eastern Africa, Homo sapiens spread outwards, conquering other members of the genus, spreading the seed of humanity throughout interracial dating
Europe, Asia, and the Americas. While new evidence may throw a wrench in that classical out-of-Africa hypothesis, the simple biological truth of our species is that we are all closely related, that at a genetic level we show very little diversity, confirming that theory that all 7 billion of us carry a shared ancestry.

The spread of humanity has of course allowed us to dominate the planet but has also given rise to new issues. Diversity in race and cultures has, more often than not, resulted in bloodshed. Such conflicts between superficially different people has of course been one of our most defining characteristics, culminating in the border and ethnic brutality of the Second World War that left millions dead and put the species on the precipice of self nigerian men
annihilation. Those lessons, one would think, would have taught us the dangers of such conflicts but in the intervening years similar battles in Rwanda, Kosovo, Cambodia, Argentina, and dozens of other places have proven that we still have great difficulty learning the lessons of the past. Now a new outbreak of violence in Nigeria has brought that spectre back to the forefront, or at least that was what was believed before it was discovered that only Nigerians died in the conflict.

"We have been able to make 95 arrests but at the same time over 500 people have been killed in this heinous act. Remain calm and be patient as the government steps up security to protect lives and property in this state,” said officials from the Plateau state government of the violence which broke out early Monday.

“The shooting was just meant to bring people from their houses and then when people came out they started cutting them with machetes,” said eyewitness Peter nigerian militants
Jang to Reuters. Other reports describe people being caught in fishing nets and animal traps before being hacked to death. Much of the violence is being blamed on conflicts between Christian and Muslim majorities, which the town of Jos borders, but it is believed that is simply being used as an excuse.

“It’s very, very difficult to tell a person’s religion by what they look like. Obviously, Sikhs and Hindus are fairly easy to tell apart, and Buddhists but that assumes that they are still clothed. Jews can be very easy to tell apart as well, sometimes. Sometimes they look Greek or adrien brody
Italian,” said Scrape TV Racism analyst Drake Douglas. “It’s a lot more difficult when it comes to Christians and Muslims, particularly when they are men and children. On the surface there’s very little to differentiate between the two religions because they accept everyone and are so widespread. Outside people giving their religion it’s very difficult sometimes to tell what they are. This isn’t like the Nazi’s killing the Jews, it’s just so difficult to tell them apart.”

Christianity and Islam are close to a fifty-fifty split in the country.

“I mean you look at the dead and the killers and you can’t really see any difference, no obvious difference. They really all look the same, at least to me, and I can’t imagine that any outside observer would be able to say any differently with honesty,” continued Douglas. “While these machete murders are tragic, you’d be hard pressed to class it alongside other major ethnic conflicts where the lines are very clearly defined. At least in all of those it was easy to tell who was who, but here, well that just isn’t possible frankly.”

All of the dead are believed to be Nigerian.
