IRAQI ELECTIONS START OFF WITH A BANG

March 4 2010

Diyala, Iraq – For centuries the process of democracy has been ever evolving. Our modern incarnations of the process, whether in a republic like the United States a parliament such as in the U.K. or some other version, are as different from its origins arnold schwarzenegger voting
as it could possibly be. That evolution is of course completely natural. Our societies have become much more complex and much larger since those early days in Greece, and the threats existing in the world are so much more dire that inevitably our political process has to adapt.

Though change is still occurring in well established democracies, it is in the emerging world that the future of democracy lies, and with countries fusing contrasting philosophies such as Communism and theology into the political process in another two thousand years our current versions of democracy might seem as antiquated and rudimentary as Greece’s version is to us. Iraq is one of those countries just starting on the process of changing democracy, not only for the world, but for themselves. Still emerging from the burden of decades of imperialist rule the iraq bombing
nation is still taking very tentative steps towards the vote, something that we in the west can barely comprehend. With elections only a few days away however the people of Iraq are marching ahead despite nerves, starting the process off with a bang that has already killed more than thirty people.

“The timing is a message to prevent people from participating in elections, because it happened just a few days before the general voting and less than 24 hours before the special vote for security forces. We feel people will challenge this message and reject it. … I’m sure they’ll turn out for the elections in force,” said Major Ghalib Atiyah al Jubouri, police spokesperson. “While we have yet to determine who it was that carried out this attack, we can ascertain that this was not a part of celebratory behaviour. These were not fireworks, they were bombs, very big ones, that blew a lot of stuff up. That type of behaviour is totally unacceptable in Iraq.”iraq explosion

Despite three major wars in the last three decades and mass butchery of civilians, Iraq is widely considered a peaceable and pleasant nation, in spots anyway.

“This election is a major test for the Iraqi process. Never before has the nation faced such a frightening and potentially freeing era. They have stabilized the country, foreign troops have moved out, and so this election means a lot for the nation and the people,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “Obviously that means that a lot of people are going to be scared and that is going to bring out a lot of bad behaviour, especially from people who are used to blowing things up. The chaos that the country has endured for the last decade or so has created a real industry around blowing things up and that may be at risk no matter who takes over. With change comes fear, it always does.”

Many more explosions are expected before the election which occurs on Sunday. It’s not clear how many will be killed between now and then.iraq explosion

“There are few nations in the world that are as good at blowing things up as Iraqis. True the United States and Russia say have all these advanced weapons and could blow an entire nation to kingdom come, but the Iraqis do it with ingenuity and brains, not money and empire,” continued Gershwin. “There is a very good likelihood that those things will be lost no matter the outcome of the election, times just change, they always do. Hopefully they will get a few more in before things really get cut off.”

50 people were also wounded in the explosion, a handful of whom are expected to die.
